can i braze cast alloy with what i got in my garage with map gas ?

mates washing mechine has broken and the alloy hinge has broken

i asssume from looking on the fourm that this cant be welded with a stick or mig with no special wire ?

i do have a mapgas for soldering would i be able to braze with this

the only flux i got is copper soldering flux would this work ok for brazing ?

I wouldn't like to try it normally way to much zinc in this type of thing.
May get away with a temporary repair with a few pins and something like j&B weld.

Should be able to find a replacement one on line for quick delivery.
Lots of brands use generic parts these days.

If you have a white goods repair place locally they may even have a good used one kicking around.

It's most likely Mazak, if you try to weld or braze it with an open flame it'll probably catch fire due to the magnesium content - I've done that with car door handles.

Local scrapyard may have scrap washing machines in.

Had a similar problem with my Electra dryer. I tried fixing them but as mentioned elsewhere they are Mazak or some other poor quality alloy, it didn't go well. Don't waste your time unless spares aren't available, new one for my dryer only cost £8.

yes will defo get a replacement and will not spend money to repair it but it was just a thought to get it going again untill i get the replacement i did see a braze with copper wire on youtube but did think would it work ?

The metal will melt away before the brazing rod/wire melts. Mazak melts at just under 400 degC, copper at over 1000 degC

Ebay is my go to, lots of small white goods repairers happy to sell you stuff to increase their turnover...if ones broke, the other won't be far behind

i know ive already done the door seal 3 months ago (that was a b*****d as its the washer dryer model) and the water outlet pipe a few months before that every time it goes wrong i get a call his other half thinks she getting a new washine mechine i go round tell the bloke yes thats a cheap fix door seal was £18 last time hose was £5 then i get his wife looking like "cant you just say its past it and i get a new mechine out of it look"

and i get a pack of beers for fixing it

Sounds like you're in danger of being cited in divorce proceedings.

welding stick with the flux knocked off ?

mig weld with normal wire tack it for a few days dont have to look good just work

Just shut the door even with the hinge broken and use a ratchet strap around the whole machine to hold it in place if just a bodge for a few days.

that sounds like what i would do but cant see his otherhalf using a strap every wash

Technoweld or lumiweld type sticks will do it, Iv used them on a few tricky jobs. And after a bit of practice they work very well. Very low temperature brazing/sodering. Map gas would be fine.
