New cars not MOT'd for 4 years?

I'm sorry cars may be getting safer but people are getting stupider

My sister can only drive an auto, so she's been told over and over they are harder on the brakes, yet when she asked me to look at them they were down to the rivets

If she had a new car it would be a wreck in 4 years as she would just think "its ok until it's mot" and she won't be alone

Sounds to me like there will be, thousands of 3-4 year old cars running around with 4 bald tyres, no lights and brakes down to the metal. Especially after the warranties have expired and they are no longer getting serviced either.

yeah alot of ignorant folk around , thinking its some kind of service /refurbishment and the oil /tyres wont need checking as the mot isnt due

I'm guessing they have used data from the mot system showing majority of new cars passing the test no problems at 4 years old

wonder how many cars fail their first MOT on tyre tread depth? Im thinking that another year on bald tyres is an accident waiting to happen.

Cars today are built to a much higher standard than cars from 30 years ago, why not move the system inline with the times.

its just the general "its not my fault" attitude by alot of folk nothings their fault and someone else is to blame

g/f's mate had a few years old citroen , oil ran low and light came on , we all said fill it up NOW its urgent , no no chuckles away im too good to work under the bonnet , few weeks later it pooped itsself and shes posting on facebook im never buying a citroen again (fair point lol) but seriously it scrapped the car because she wouldnt check the oil once a fortnight

yeah sure the 4 year old car wont have holes in the sills , but people need a gun holding to thier head to carry out the bare basic maintence like pumping up tyres and checking the tread

I have no issue with the change based on the reasons given, it's just a lot of people don't know or care about maintenance

I know exactly what is wrong with my car (non of it critical) and unsurprisingly it passed it's mot recently

There are always going to.be people that drive around with faulty components on their car which fail in between mot's due to the car aging but new cars must generally be exceeding 4 years before major problems arise

Pfft, they're generally dropped off for a "service" at the dealer when the warranty says to do so (or thereabouts) and are given a cursory tapping with a small hammer by a "qualified technician".

We took the wife's car for a service at the appropriate authorised main dealer who tried to charge nearly £300 for stuff that wasn't done.

I could've shown the bit of paper showing replacement brake parts when the brakes failed and said "not my fault" - but it seemed better to have a very loud argument in the sales area, not pay then do the bloody work myself like I should've in the first place.

So in summary - new cars are looked generally AT...

Not all garages are useless but some do exist

Some reps rack up 100,000 miles a year , these cars are then sold on to Joe public at three years old after the speedo has had the customary correction ( there are no old MOT`s to check mileage)That is not going to be the best of secondhand cars to own on its fourth birthday. The legislation needs to include that all second hand cars sold need to be in a road worthy condition unless sold as spares, that may give the unsuspecting purchasers a bit of comeback.

It's already law that cars need to be roadworthy, so unless you are buying one without mot or is stated it has faults when sold it's already covered, it just doesn't always happen that way due to dodgy dealers. There is also the problem where other faults exist that are not covered by mot so as usual it's buyer beware, and get it checked out independently if you want an honest report

The last statistic I heard was that a quarter of all cars having their first MOT after 3 years were failing it, that alone should be reason enough to reduce the time rather than extend it.

Even though some were failing on very basic items such as wipers failing to clear the screen and given that a lot of people driving nowadays won't ever check their tyre condition and brake pads etc then they should be reducing the time to first test.

At the end of the day an MOT test is £54.85, if you can afford to buy a new car then surely you can afford that every year.

i thought new cars only got serviced as they come with 3 years or 60,000 miles pre payed for serviceing so it actualy gets serviced till the warranty is up.

i've met people who view serviceing as false economy, they drop the oil once a year ( no oil filter change ) and bang the air filter out ( at best ) where has this myth come from that modern cars dont rust the new pudgits rust like crazy

My ex-wife's Xantia (a perfectly nice car) threw a conrod through the front of the sump after she failed to respond to the flashing oil warning level lamp on the dash. Apparently it had been flashing for 'several weeks' but it was my fault for not checking it (in a car I rarely drove and despite her never mentioning the flashing light).

At the end of the day an MOT test is £54.85, if you can afford to buy a new car then surely you can afford that every year.

Using that logic, given that almost every new car comes with Bluetooth now, why do you still see idiots in flash cars with a mobile phone glued to their ear?
