Anyone use WVO?

A few years ago I messed about using wvo in a Mitsubishi Delica I had. Worked great and was the only way I could afford to use the old bus at sub 20mpg.

Problem I had was getting any used oil. Tried everywhere within 20 miles of me and only found one place who was willing to give me any and that was a burger van so the quality wasnt good. Always offered to pay and give a waste transfer note but everyone was always suspisious.

Anyone else had the same problem as I keep getting drawn back to a Delica.

My cousin brews his own for his old Land Rover. Mainly deep fat frying medium from pub kitchens etc. Process seems to involve centripetal filtering, treating and heating with caustic soda and bubbling air through it (not necessarily in that order as I've not taken a detailed interest) . I know someone else who does the same and runs a very old Transit on it. His problem is that the Tranny is rotting away and anything more moder wont tolerate the home brew.

On average I got 23mpg but short trips did drop the mpg. You using WVO?

Mine is a five speed manual so will do a few more mpg, I have never used chip oil but my mate does. He does get a fair bit of grief with filters and the thing stinks, if you get behind him in traffic you can smell the fuel type.

Costco has new veg oil at 80p a litre (20 litre drums).
It might not be wvo prices, but its still 30% cheaper than diseasel.
Unless you get an lpg conversion?

I have spoken to him before. Just wondered how people got there used Wvo? I ended buying it from costco but the thought of potentially free fuel was always at the back of my head.

I used to run it in my Shoggy manual. i got it from a Italian restaurant. 12pl and was great stuff, i filtered down well to 1mic. when i was running short i got if off ebay and at times they would help out with info of other sellers they knew when they were short. Some crap stuff but all ended up around 45pl from ebayers. I had a 200l tub in the shed i just kept topped up.
In winter i just added 5% petrol and was great all year round. Every few weeks i used it all up that was in the tank and ran it on diesel for maybe 100 miles to clean the system out.

I will be doing it again as after another new shoggy unless i get a MK3.

I have a Green Fuels transesterification set up and had it for several years now, we have a few suppliers and get the WVO for free but the filtering out of the waste food material is the main problem which was solved by using filter bags, put the filtered oil into the machine with a chemical package, plug it and leave overnight.
I run the tractor and teleporter on a 50/50 mix of red diesel and transesterificated WVO.

I have done it for years and have ran loads of cars vans etc... on both straight veg and bio.
Don't buy a processor till you have read the wiki and asked some questions on the forums.

I have all the equipment and gear/ chemicals etc to do it but dont bother (time ha ) I just run new svo mixed with derv and a little petrol depending on the time of year
I have run thouands of ltrs of wvo when diesel went to over 1.60 or more ! but it is a pain filtering it.

My friends and I wee set up to make Bio diesel. sadly with the passing of one of use. the project died.
After all we were doing it for fun and something to build.
Getting the waste oil was a big issue at the start, mainly because all out take always and kitchen places had contracts to either:
A: Return waste Oil to suppliers to be recycled.
B: Contact to a waste OIL company (Big one here is A&B oil) to collect and dispose of.
All down to the council trying to stop it being dumped.

We had a deal with a Curry house were we supply approved plastic waste oil containers and collect them.

Have you considered that route?

The only issue we had was with a Merc. Vito. The owner was advised to have the seals on the fuel system changed to allow "Green fuels" to be used.

Filters we robed/ borrowed from the defunct milking paler, upside of them they can be burnt in the waste oil heater.

oh yes, look were you stand on the Tax side. You may be able to claim a rebate, we did but I am sure it has stopped.
I am sure some one will advise if it is still going on.

One problem that usually occurs is the delivery pump in the rotory type injector system can become weak, that can be cured by fitting an electric lift pump like a red top or some such, to boost pressure in the system they then run usually faultless.
in fact veg oil is better for the system than derv because all this talk of low sulfer diesel is just sales blurb for 'we are selling crap diesel that will wear your system out because of lack of lubricity'
the low sulfer is actually low OIL !!
In fact veg oil has more lubricity than straight derv

Yep I ran my Surf on SVO mixed with diesel for a while and it seemed to run smoother.
A cracked cylinder head put a stop to that thought although I don't think it was the cause. I've now got a new AMC head on it £££££!

I have done it for a few years. Enjoyed(!) The filtering and dewatering and the twin tank conversion but just got knowwhere getting any oil. I asked one chipshop and you would have sworn i was asking for his daughter.

Tried emailing so I could explain everything and tried all sorts of places and got nothing.

Ive been making bio for about 6 years. The only time i ever go to the petrol station is to fill up the chainsaw, or if i happen to borrow a friends petrol motor.

Its tougher at the start - you drive out of your way for the oil, but, once youve been at it a while, you end up with collections on your doorstep. My furthest is about 15 mins away, and i go there ever now and again to pick up 400ltrs or so.

Cost to convert varies, but probably about 15ppl, once all the electricity, and chemicals are accounted for. No duty to pay unless you get into commercial quantities (2500l / yr)

My feedstock costs me between 5 and 10 pence per liter.


I have plenty of oil. To the extent that i gave away 300ltrs last night to a local friend (it was solid oil, which you can use as summer biodiesel, but i have so much, i cant be bothered - so i gave it him, as he runs his swimming pool on it)



The key thing to remember is that the vast majority of restaurants etc. have a collector - they have to have one, else they would drown in their used oil. If you ask them, 9 times out of 10, or even 19 out of 20 they will be sorted. You just need to find the venues who have just changed hands, or have lost touch with their existing collector, etc. (loads of other reasons).

Places like schools, or sports clubs, care homes, etc. are good targets - not fish and chip places. The high volume oil users (eg fish and chip shops) will certainly have collectors sorted, but the low volume places may have a years stock pile sitting in their basement not knowing what theyre going to do with it...


I get calls about 2x a month from new people wanting pickups, but im drowning in it allreddy, and certainly dont want to drive more than... well, not very far!


But at the start, id drive about all over picking it up.
