We are based between Penrith and Carlisle and due to increase in our workload we are looking for a workshop formant. Must be able to fit in a young team of 5 to help drive the company farward. We specialise in livestock equipment and are rapidly expanding our product range.
The ideal candidate must be;
Enthusiastic
Loyal
Have practicle fabrication skills
Willingness to work

The position is full time with flexable hours. Salary negotiable based on experience and knowledge

The word that bothers me most is Loyal - translate - stay with the company even after someone makes you a far better offer with better holidays, working environment and newer kit...

uhhh no...it ain't the 50s anymore, companies fire staff at will, so they should rightfully expect staff to be just as mercenary...

Agree....and don't agree also
Bigger places will hire and fire at will, depending on workload.
From my experience over the years, smaller firms will hope to hang on to the good people they've trained...especially if it's a bit niche market

My lads are all young. I make it clear in job adverts; 'must fit in with a young team'. Nothing wrong with that - It could be a 70 year old fella, long as he can do the job and keep up with the young lads then great, he's the man for the job.

Disagree. If the business is built up of 9-10 young staff members the requirements need to be made clear to a prospective employee to avoid wasting everyone's time. There's no discrimination.

Fitting in with a young team is about attitude not age discrimination cant see a problem with the legal side, its not actually saying you have to be young my Father in Law is still farming massively @ 85 he could fit in with a young team any day of the week !!!

That's a bit of a generalisation, there are good companys about who look after their staff even during economic hard times and share the profits in the good years. I have worked for a hire and fire merchant in the past but usually they get a reputation and just get used as a stepping stone by employees.

Any director of a small business worth his salt is aware of this and looks after his team accordingly. Of course there are some too dumb to realise this and suffer the consequences.

And Yes im in a Union always have been as I couldnt work on the sites I needed to at the time without being a member when I was younger... closed shop etc....I am still a member now as an Engineer Surveyor for probably the biggest player in the industry now I cant buy insurance on the high street for the price of my Union fees that would pay for the Barrister costs if I ever found my self in that position.

Substitute "young" with "christian" or "white" - if it's discrimination to use the latter, it's discrimination to use the first.

Sadly there are some that don't suffer the consequences.........and seem to be immune to the repercussions that should come there we.

There really is no wonder the UK is on its **** is there. The world has gone far far too soft.

I think on my next job advert i'll word it in a really wishy washy way to avoid all possibility of upsetting some soft soaper under a stone somewhere and end up with employee after employee who isn't right for the job, has an accident, makes a claim, gets paid out blah blah blah.

If you get the chance to argue that in court on a discrimination charge...let me know, I'll be interested to see how many seconds the judge/magistrate etc lets you run that idea....
