Yes, afraid so and I thought the same when the assessor told me.
They were spanners made for large equipment which was in popular use at the time, but as times moved on much of the equipment became obsolete and the tools required to work on them became virtually obsolete and the manufacturers stopped making them as a a standard item and they only do a special order batch run, essentially they wait until they have sufficient orders for that size of spanner and make a small batch, a small batch run is expensive and when I looked them up for myself I found the assessor was correct.

Just a thought but a spanner being "out of production" wouldn't make it worth £1000, and an insurance company wouldn't be rushing to value it as such.
I'm pretty sure they would value to replace it with one of equivalent quality - at the end of the day as unique as some of these things are and as much as I like spanners etc they are at the end of the day mere tools of work, not faberge eggs!

Before this thread causes work for the mod's over a £1000 spanner argument.
Please provide the link to the site you have verified their value on, I genuinely have some very large and old spanners, I doubt there is one worth over £10 but always willing to be proven wrong, in fact would be very happy indeed.
I've always use walker midgley, I'm fortunate to have never made a claim but the paper work that needs filled in for the policy asks what I think are the right questions about the kit I want covered.

My insurer just has a pc sum to cover the loss of hand tools, he originally asked for a breakdown but realised on one of his visits that its totally impractical. Its a new for old policy thats bundled in with all the other buildings and contents, that said I don`t have any spanners costing a fassand pand

My home shop is insured on the house policy, we added extra cover. But they did some restrictions, the biggest was no OA gear. Just propane.
I have a ongoing list which I update. Plus I have pictures hard and CD copies.
The extra cover does cost us but it is worth it.
Security is taken care of, the simplest one, on the up and over door,was to disconnect the outside lock to top catch. That gets secured on the inside. The other door is doubled lock.
I am sure the OP has bean on other sites in the past, may not be word for word, but pretty dam close. But I can not be bothered to look.
Any tool out of production will be valued on it's replacement, wear of the old. No insurance company will ever pay out over the odds for anything.
The ones what do "like for Like" or "New for old" will have a deal or arrangement to buy and supply.

Its a difficult situation as insurance companies are quick to point out any reason to to avoid paying out.. when a friend lost a few thousand pounds worth of microwave radio test gear from his 'shed' the insurance company refused to pay out as the equipment was clearly not part of a domestic property, then it tried to refuse as it was tools.. then after a long battle they agreed to pay... They did this by providing a Dixons voucher for 90 quid as you can get a perfectly good microwave oven for that much.
Soo.. documenting what you have is going to be a big help but I suspect for big complex workshops etc there is very little point going to the 'compare the meerkat' site and picking the cheapest quote. If you want them to pay out you are most likely going to need to talk to a proper insurance company and pay a sensible premium.NFU and FUW seem to understand home workshops and certainly in rural areas have offices staffed by people.
At my workplace we were losing cabling at a ridiculous rate, the only thing that seemed to stop the flow was the use of 'smartw ater' (I have had to deliberately miss spell smart_water as the site spell checker deletes it ) but google the product with the two words joined together.
It was so successful I bought two serial numbers and use one for my car and the other for home stuff. When I bought mine there was a special offer as a lifetime licence instead of having to renew after 24 months and at 60 quid a year thats a big saving.
