Peugeot 2008 towing electrics

Elderly friend (79) has a 14 reg Peugeot 2008 and wants a towbar. Main agents have quoted £450 for the kit but won't fit. I have said I can get a genuine towbar with detachable ball off eBay for just over £100 and after looking at instructions can easily fit for him.
Then comes the electrics
You can get dedicated kits for the 2008 but over £150
Anyone ever fitted towing electrics to this model Peugeot and can say how you connect to main wiring harness ? I can get a bypass relay so no problem with the cars electronics but don't want to start splicing into the harness (I don't use Scotchlocks !).
With some cars you have a short harness with multipin socket on the main harness that the dedicated towing electrics plug into and wonder if the same applies to the 2008 ?

Late spec cars seem to be the same, the Freelander 2 even needs it activating at the main dealers or it still won't work!

I'd splice it behind the back lights, was gonna do the same on my freelander but I found a genuine loom to just plug it in, along with the towing flasher relay, no activation required

fitting a tow bar is easy as long as you have good diy skills there are plenty of videos online to help the only thing i will add to the mix if you are trying to diy yourself when buying a bar 2nd hand make sure all the bits are there and BUY A GOOD KNOWN MAKE this will make fitting one far easyer than the cheap ones as they fit much better taking a large amount of bad words out of it

fitting the electics are prob the hardest part if there is not a plug bit to add the trailer electrics to the car wires but this is easy done with a meter

i recomend buying a witter bar with electrics with it and if its not out the car yet even better if the car is being scraped you can get round see how it comes off the car and when removing the sparky bits just cut the car wiring loom and leave the car electrics for you to copy when installing in yours

from when i done one years ago i did just that and no head scraching just mithodical

Not quite so easy to splice in or connect into the lights anymore. Canbus systems cocked all that up. Very easy to damage an ecu you never even thought they had. No idea if a 2008 uses it or not, but might be worth checking.

This what I'm worried about.
Even if you use the dedicated harness you still have to pay main agent to activate the towing modual

Fit a bypass relay, that's what they're designed for.

I fitted one to a an 08 Honda the electrics were easy it was a kit just spliced to the existing light wiring an earth a live straight to battery so it drew the trailer lighting power from the battery and just used lighting wiring for the signal

Bypass relays work for the lights, but if you want all manufacturer options to work, they won't. needed more jiggling to shut reversing sensors up on my Alfa and make trailer LED lights work properly.

He's got an unbraked trailer rated at 750kg and an Conway trailer tent - again unbraked.
