New workshop / looking for an RSJ

So, We had to leave the last workshop and the Landlord became a bit od a <Expletive Deleted> and doubles the rent.

Bad times

So we found a new place with cheaper rent

Good Times

But its a bit further away and not a quick stoll away (3 miles)

Bad times

But the worksop is a bit bigger and has a flat floor ( the other one was rough as a lady that sailors know)

Good times

But there is not a handy beam to attach a chain host like the other one

Bad times

So I thought Id make a gantry attached to one wall up high and have a set of legs on the other side (the door wraps round one of the walls)

Good times

But Im unable to find a 203x103x25 3m long locally for not much money

Bad times

So does any one know of a cheap source up in Scotland without costing £50 a meter, or is that the price i'm going to have to pay? Its going to push the price of the build to over well over £200 with the extra steel I need.

Any way the plan is a 3m wide gantry on a 6m runner. I will then cover both ends of whatever car i'm working on and the lathe as well (which is now in 2 bits again and will get a repaint this time and the suds pump fully working and nicly wired up (instead of the lead coming out from one of the doors)

I'll post some Piccies of the workshop up when there is a sembalance of normaility (everything is in a big pile and the electrickery is getting a rewire in the new year.

So thats a little teaser for Xmas Lets see who can guess correctly.

you could adapt around what you can get much cheaper by the look of that its an 8" x 4" so wont a 8 x 5" one do instead ?

How big is your workshop? if it is big enough is it possible to fit an overhead type crane? by retrofitting one you have full movement for and aft, and full movement side to side, you can fit your blocks to them for lifting and carrying.

I would be into Pandarosa (scrap place up here) to see what they had, I suspect you have similiar down by Perth, who will sell it to you by weight. Should be cheaper than a steel stockist.

They are pretty friendly and quite helpful to be fair. Haven't seen or heard an advert from them in along while though, I suspect they don't need to!

You would need a decent trailer too for a 3m RSJ, but there must be somewhere down by you which is similar. They are usually pretty decent guys who will chop the length you need.

The workshop part is 3.4 x 7.6 and about 3.5 high. (that's metres not feet)

there is a 4 panel door that slides round, which takes up half the left hand wall.

Incidentally, I was walking the Dog round the site tonight and spies a 250 x 140 rusting away. Its 3.5m long and is only a few hundred metres away.

Its been gas axes at one end and has a plate welded to the other so I could use that and beef up the design.

I'm gonna put some feelers out and find out if its needed. There is some building work going on and it'll only be worth 15 quid scrap if its the builders so i'll offer them a little bit more. If it is the builders I'll probably not see them until mid January

If its an old building RSJ it may be twisted along its length, something to be aware of.

Timber, for extra strength just bolt more together or bolt a length of flat bar to it.
