After 16 years of dragging 50 metre welding leads up scaffolding, down holes, through dog muck and worse, modern technology and extra funds mean life is about to get a whole lot easier.
I first heard about the lorch micorstick 160 mobilepower1 and thought phaa that'll be useless but just recently I have become aware of just how much battery tech has advanced.
I was lucky enough to have a brief go on a new metabo 9" grinder powered by 36volt battery and was amazed at the torque it also seemed to last for more than long enough on 1 charge to do most site work with 2 batteries.
Then we got a stihl battery chainsaw in work and again torque and power are incredible.
Anyway, back to the welder. I was dangling from the rafters of an old windmill one morning just finished welding up some damaged plates when a recently promoted guy (now my manager) said I'll gather up these leads for you while you finish of up there, I said great thanks.
About half an hour later I went down for tea break and there was the bossman sitting on the doorstep, STILL out of breath, 100 metres of entangled leads in front of him.
He says to me is there no other way to get the welder up there? I jokingly suggested he buy me one of those new battery welders, he says how much I said about 2 grand and laughed.
15 minutes later he comes back over and says the money's avaliable for that welder go tomorrow and get it ordered
HAPPY DAYS!
It's coming end of next week.
