I picked this up at auction today. Ideal I thought for metal fettling. Has one jaw missing but is in reasonable nick. Its a Sealey ASV250. 250mm jaws and opens 250mm I would like to get the nut out but I am wondering how to get the pin out as it is a blind hole. They don't make them anymore but you can still buy them new on the net. You can get a few spares but the jaws are £70 plus each. About three times what I paid for it! Are they just mild steel or are they hardened?

I have got similar pins out with a couple of sharp taps to shock it a bit and then a good pair of mole grips to turn it before using a lever behind the grips to extract it.

I think the jaws are hardened/toughened to a degree - not glass hard but certainly every vice I've ever had has tough jaws....a drill bit will mark it and start to drill a hole but the drill bit would be dead long before it got through it.
Nothing to stop you making some jaws up out of mild steel. I made some jaws for a Record 25 5 years ago and still in service with no problems.

cunbriasteve: I tried your trick of tapping the pin and lo and behold it moved it enough to reveal that it could be pushed out from under the base. I could not see any sign of it on initial inspection so tapping it broke the rust ring enough to see it. Result!
