The gas turns to plasma though when it passes through the nozzle.
At the end of the day it still produces metal fume which you don't want to breathe in, whether it be produced by welding, burning, plasma cutter etc.
Doing the odd bits isn't likely to harm you, but long term, yes it will.
They should be doing more than throwing air fed masks at you. It's the companies duty to provide you with a safe place of work.
If you work in a shop filled with heavy fume day in day out that's not a safe place and chucking ppe at the problem doesn't solve it either, that's just a personal addition to stop you breathing fume in that gets to you before it's extracted. Ppe is a last resort and eliminating the problem is the first. You can't not create fume with such equipment so a method of taking the fume away is the next best thing.
Is there anything in law stating anything about air extracting equipment etc?
Is there a formula to work out size of unit(s) needed for X amount of workshop space for example??
By law, should an employer have say a particular extractor fitted in their workshop, provide a certain mask etc?
Not that I'll ever be in that situation myself, just got me thinking about folk who are in that position

As a contractor I can rarely even get in a door these days without submitting a RAMS, let alone do any work. Most companies employ the services of independent HSE companies to draw up their workplace policies, its never a guarantee that the employee`s best interests are at heart. As Mee points out for the most part they are box ticking exercises, real time risk assessment/methods statements ( RAMS ) are seldom part of a factories HSE policy.

Probably a question for @Parm
Even though I work in a very specific H&S role, i too am a contractor when im at some one elses factory and have to submit RAMS. Me or the rest of the team have never been picked up on anything. They just get filled away.As a contractor I can rarely even get in a door these days without submitting a RAMS, let alone do any work.
Yes some factories I go to are definitely like that, but a lot of my work is in steel works, glass, oil and gas and pharma - as I'm sure you know these "tend" to be quite well regulated (though not always!)Even though I work in a very specific H&S role, i too am a contractor when im at some one elses factory and have to submit RAMS. Often we have thought about making things up and producing them in Spanish to check if anyone actually reads them.
A little controversial for me to say but more often than not its just an A$$E covering exercise. This is borne out by the number of prosecutions ive been involved with where its been high lighted that RAMS were not suitable and sufficient for the task in hand or simply "cut and Paste"

I think it is a horrible job.
