Gun cabinet

Hi

I am moving home and will need to move guns.

It is I a small room but are u aloud to have it in plane sight or does it need to eg be in cupbourd.?

I will be phone firearms people at some point soon.

It should be out of sight of casual visitors.

There's no need to phone the firearms bunch, just do a solid job of installing it and notify them (recorded delivery or get e-mail confirmation of receipt if doing it that way) of the change of address. Some forces like to come out and look at the install, some don't. All you have to do is put it in the right place, make it secure and notify them.

They may come and have a look at the next licence renewal. Ideally the cabinet should be in a corner so that it may be rawlbolted to two adjacent walls.

What grinds my gears about gunsafes is they have to have a kite mark or ce mark or some other meaningless sticker on them to pass. They are puffed up sports lockers. I wanted to make my own out of 6 or 8mm plate i could have got for free at work (it was bought for a job that never came off).

Instead i had to buy a safe that was made out of swg gauge sheet metal, that i reckon an oik with a tin opener could get into.

If it's secured solidly and to the fabric of the house it should be ok. I had to have dwangs fitted to bolt mine to.

It may be different over there but I don't think anyone bothered to check when I had mine inspected initially. I had a renewal last week and they definitely didn't check for kite marks or bs logo etc.

I did the same this time and in the last house. Couple of dwangs very securely fixed to the uprights at the height of the holes in the cabinet for coach bolts to go through, then 18mm ply screwed on in place of the plasterboard. Down to the floor through a piece of ply on top of the floorboards to make sure everything is square to the wall to save pulling the cabinet out of true.

Mine isn't, it's fitted to dwangs behind the plasterboard. The firearms officer has tried to pull it off without success.

I'm afraid that's not correct mate. I asked the head of Firearms licensing up here before fitting mine years ago and it just needs to be fixed to the fabric of the building.

FYI it doesn't need to be police approved, but they usually ask what make it is and note it down.

Maybe on reflection there are instances where you can't do that

It needs to be securely attached.
