Clear laquer

Currently doing a project and the client has asked for it all to be clear lacquered, I have no experience with the stuff what so ever!!! Please help Looking for some info on:

prepping the steel
What's the best product and way to apply

Lacquer is just paint with no colour in it !!!

I've used lacquer for a few indoor bits, seem to be holding up nicely. For prep I just wore brushed everything wiped clean with acetone and then sprayed. That was for mild steel. Not sure exactly what the product was. That was my experience, not sure if it's the correct way to do things, so interested in this topic.

It's a square box really out of 100x100 angle and flat bar.
I will be doing it by hand.

Yeah that's the same idea I've had, just thought I would ask before I attacked it!! in case there is any good tips that people may have.

I've found Autotek clear laquer to work well, though it's a gloss. Matte laquer seems to be a lot harder to come by on the highstreet. Halfords do a matte but it's obviously expensive, and a slightly smaller can: about £8 from memory.
I have heard of folks using scotchbrite to rub down laquered work to knock back the glossy sheen, but I haven't tried it myself.
