Not unusual to find them at auction with the stat removed to get them to run for the 1/4 hour or so needed - head gasket is the usual cause.

With luck that won't be your problem.

It was spate of Fiesta and Ka vans that I saw, like all things the vans at the local auction seem to be in batches as fleets swap.

I reckon combustion gas test in the coolant is most reliable, from what I saw a lot got a bottle of reel-steel and back where they came from ..

I'm surprised they started using valves again, more to go wrong

Are you using the correct type of thermostat? Some are shielded to divert the flow through the engine and heater for a quick warm up and cut off the flow to the rad : others do not.

i had to replace one for a friend a while back.

plastic gets brittle and breaks, coolant goes everywhere..

heater too didn't work........ did once a new one was fitted.

Hello Ukracer,

simple things first, is there stuill air in the system from replacing the thermostat. I would say that all is working well if it runs normally with the original butchered thermostst. (Re taking them out for the summer, not a good ideal as it upsets the distribution of flow through the engine)
I would see if you can bleed any air from the coolant circuit.
