1.0mm Titanium Grade 2 Filler Rod Supplier

Just had an exhaust repair come in, guy said it was stainless, arced up on the part, "this ain't right", spark test, Titanium.

Luckily had some 6Al4V sheet so guillotined very fine strips but this wasn't ideal.

Anyone know where I can purchase a small quantity of wire? Would be nice to have perhaps 25-50 lengths stored in case I ever need them.

Grade 1 (slightly purer & softer)* wire is available from jewelry suppliers for peanuts in various diameters and size coils. Works fine for non critical stuff like exhausts or anything you'd happily cut slivers from sheet to use as wire. 1mm and thinner Grade 2 is a bit harder to find in the UK, there's usually an electoplating supplier selling cut lengths of 1.0mm grade 2 on the bay in packs of 100 and other than that for small quantities i only know of several Septic welding suppliers selling 0.045" erti-2 for example http://stores.ebay.co.uk/WeldingCit...044177014&_sid=50216284&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 which obviously isn't as good value as it used to be 'cause of the exchange rate

For occasional/get yourself out of trouble repairs personally i'd buy some 0.8 and 1mm grade 1 from jewelry types... i've got 'proper' 1mm erti-2 wire (not enough to sell any though) and still sometimes find a small coil of 0.8mm more useful

* grades 1 - 4 are all commercially pure with the difference between 'em being trace impurities left, higher the number the less pure and harder/stronger

Seems I can only find 1.0mm grade 2 in the states from Arc Zone. TiTek only do 1.6mm Grade 2.

Thanks hotrodder, I think I will have to buy some grade 1 on a spool.

If I can find a supplier I will buy a box and perhaps split it up to recover the cost, I know a guy who works in aerospace so I will ask if he knows who supplies his rods.

Ovbiously worth checking out but it often results in pretty large min order quantities/prices... TiTek were one of the few really helpful suppliers i found and like you say they don't go smaller than 1.6mm wire. Been through something similar with magnesium plate earlier this year, needed an offcut around 5 or 6mm thick and the closest i could get after spending an afternoon on the phone was slices cut off a 4" dia round bar at nearly £100ea + VAT or something daft. Ended up having to order from China as they'd happily post a piece of flat plate for less than a score all in What turned up looked like it'd been buried in someones garden for several years but it cleaned up OK and was nicer to weld than the casting it was patching up

Bloody in America it's so easy getting hold of certain materials we really are a bit behind over here in that respect. I know a few guys in the states that would be able to help out but by the time anything gets sent over it's a nightmare cost wise.

Just touched the piece to a flap disc on a hidden area, white sparks, knew it was titanium.

Yes I came across them after you mentioned them, pretty cheap in my opinion. May well go for it. I'll see what this supplier comes back with, like you say, doubt they will do anything less than a few kg.

Right so I've had a very good quote for 1kg packs of filler. Now I'm probably looking to keeping 1/2kg of 1.0mm and 1/2kg of 0.8mm. They way I see it, if it lasts me 20 years, so be it, unlike aluminium, it isnt going to "go bad". So if other people are interested I am happy to split up some packs in small or large quantities at cost price to recoup some money + postage obviously. This is Aerospace certified ERTi-2 wire so not bent strands of lesser quality stuff.
Right now there is some unmarked 1.00mm Grade 2 on ebay, at £75 per hundred strands. Im not sure how that works out in weight. I will count how many individual rods I have when they arrive.

About half the density of steels so 1kg of Ti is gonna be around twice as many rods as you'd get in a 1kg pack of stainless... the back of my fag packet says 100 lengths of 1.0mm Ti filler wire weighs ~ 1/3kg ?
