Vibrators

So I was reading on another 'on line resource for gentlemen' about vibrators...

I've had the odd glow plug stick in a cylinder head and snap, even when using a decent slide hammer.

Someone mentioned ( but had no detail ) a mobile extractor service using a puller that 'vibrates' the glow plug out in situ.

I reckon that sounds like a useful tool and something that it might be possible to make but I need to know what the vibration is, low frequency thumps, ultrasonic maybe ? unlikely due to the damping effect of the head but then that might be part of the technique?

Anyone know anything about them?

Now for the sensible answers, does it try to turn the stuck plug or just vibrate & pull? just wondering if one of the vibrating engravers could be modified?.

Never had a Glow plug stick on me, I do have those nice deep flexible sockets.
Injectors, yes.
I take the car to a local garage and they have device what attaches to the socket between and the injector and it vibrates at 400Hz to 4Khz as you turn it.
For the ones you need to pull/twist it attaches to the puller.

It is a Krypton unit, I will ask for more details next time I am there.

I don't know ( or rather din't until TYA said: ) but am thinking it cant be that difficult to copy someone's good idea :-/

Thanks both, I'd be interested to know what you discover. On a RRS its a body off job if you need to replace a snapped glow plug, now its unlikely that I'd ever be doing one of them but I just think it might be an interesting little project to make the tool.

I can see how to make a direct pull type but maybe something to act as a lever off a convenient part of the engine might be more of a challenge. Easy to make for one job but harder to design a universal tool.

It doesn't sound like what you're used to but Snap On do a vibe tool which is basically a socket which you apply pressure to while coupled to an air hammer to give the vibration. Yet to try one out for myself, the sockets are special but could probably be made with a bit of effort.

They use much the same at work, called buster bars or screw knockers, for very stuck screws.

Basically a 3/8 drive handle on the end of a rivet gun, very effective but noisy when theres 10 people using them at the same time.

Nice to know they're very effective, I bought one and haven't used it yet, nice to know it'll eventually pay for itself.
Glad I'm not having to listen to ten of them in use together

Mind, there are loads of cattle by the workshop which sometimes just won't shut up, horrible creatures.

What a load of cobblers that device is! all the pins they sheared off could have been dealt with heat or working back and forth

Not quite because you control the amount of turning force. On smaller stuff like screws there's much less chance of rounding.

Not something I ever use on cars but invaluable at work. I suspect it would work well on stuck injectors though.

use a impact driver on stuck screws, as for the injectors the air hammer needs to work in the opposite direction to be effective

I don't know how good the tool is from personal experience (yet) but I think you're being a bit quick to say they could have been dealt with other methods. Yes heat is brilliant but not always an option - I have an airline available more than I have heat available, but more to the point there are a lot of times when it's just not possible to use heat as there's a risk of either damaging or firing something. Working things back and forth is good but only if you can get it to move in the first place.
I don't view this as the complete answer to anything that's seized but as another tool to add to the available methods of removing difficult things.

No I dont have any detail, hence the original post .. there was no mention of an air hammer or anything violent.

The service was a man in a van turning up to avoid snapping the offending potentially stuck item. My immediate thought was ultrasonic but that is just my mind not any real information.

On the basis that the breaking the stuck item meant engine out / body off to fix, the high cost of this mobile service was deemed worth it.

I was hoping someone here might have heard of it as it sounds interesting.
