another thought I had was to make one from a cheap electro magnet

I use a magnetic pick up tool from the £ shop, wear a glove on left hand...run the tool over the drill etc, collect the swarf and wipe it off and into the bin with the gloved hand..works great

Yes I have one of those - it's handy for removing swarf from the drip tray of my Bridgeport. However I have a roll along one that I use after every machining session on the floor, and it gets much more use than the wand.

Put the tool end in a plastic bag. Whip the bag off swarf falls off. Easy.

I keep the magnets off of blown loudspeakers and use them for all sorts of things including swarf collection

Yes, I bought one to remove swarf from my lathe & Power hacksaw, occasionally to pick up screws/nails from the floor. It works great, can personally recommend them.

Brilliant. I have one and its been worth every penny. Picks up swarf and grinding dust in mounds!!

Seen them used on clay pigeon grounds for picking up empty cartridges.

You could also turn it inside out and the swarf would be ready bagged ?

dont buy...mine went in the bin as i think it was this sucker that magnetised the tool post on my harrison and took months to wear off. Everytime i turned ferrous the tool tip looked like a candy floss

There is a lesson to be learnt from that isn't there......

Wont be much good if you machine anything other than steel.........i use a vaccuum cleaner.....

i was thinking more for grinding dust because that gets everywhere and sticks to all my welding magnets

We use the wheeled types, idiots always cut metal cladding and flashing on membrane roofing systems, walk on them and puncture the membrane and try to blame us, or walk through metal swarf then walk on the roofs.
