modern moore & wright stuff

I am in the market to purchase some micrometer's, mainly for measuring engine internal bits and bobs .i'm a bit loathed to buy stuff like this secondhand as you can never be sure how its been treated previously.

I have seen this set on amazon,

is the modern stuff by these guys considered decent? I know this probably isn't their elite range but is it going to be rebranded tat like silverline/rolson etc..

don't shoot me but I prefer to use metric over old money sizes.

I would prefer a nice set of digitals but I cant seem to find any for realistic money, I like nice things but realistically it will be something that gets used once in a blue moon so chucking 100's at this seems a bit much.

I reckon they are mitutoyu's rebranded. I have seen them and liked them, and would buy a set. If there is a cromwell near you, drop in and look at a set. for just over 50 notes i reckon you won't go too far wrong.

metrics better for measurement and I'm an old fart weights imperial all the way. I can only relate to weight by one hundredweight= 50 kg

Ref the current MW stuff I was also sceptical about it but took the plunge and put £30 down about 18months ago for a set of digital verniers.
It's a fact Moore Wright isn't the same Moore Wright we knew many years ago buttttttttt my verniers have been faultless.
Still on the same battery, still smooth and still accurate. They always go back to zero and they do everything they should very well. I'm terrible for finding fault with stuff and I'd of happily chucked em out if they were junk but I'd have another set no problems if they broke. So I'd say it's pretty good gear imo.

How accurate do micrometers need to be for reasonable engine work?

I'm hunting around for 0.0001" micrometers on eBay for this (I have a set of slip gauges to measure the actual accuracy of the micrometers over a range).

Eg for measuring crank journals etc for roundness, I'd have thought that 0.01mm wasn't accurate enough

I bought a M&W digital caliper which inside a year started to lose zero intermittently. Stripped apart I found the PCB not seated correctly due to moulding flash and since reassembly has been ok. I regard the quality of this caliper to be somewhere between the cheaper versions and a Mitutoyo.

the workshop manual I have gives bearing journal etc.. tolerances to,
metric to 3 decimal places, so, 0.123
imperial to 4 decimal places. so, 0.1234

I just prefer to measure small things in mil and I tend to measure large things in feet.

I will get a set of those Cromwell ones and report back.
any suggestions on external micrometers / bore gauges? I was thinking of just picking up a set of telescopic ones (look like T's) that you then transfer your measurement over to you mic.

Hmm, unless I've looked at the wrong picture, the Cromwell micros linked to are only 0.01mm?

0.01mm (one hundredth of a mm, or 0.0004" for old timers ) is way more than accurate enough for engine work.

Hold a crankshaft in your hand for a couple of minutes and it'll shift more than that anyway...

Hmm, I don't know if the roundness would be affected by heat (which I assume the hand bit is about), as journals would probably grow equally in diameter all around, right?

I'm looking for a set for myself, just trying to persuade myself I need to spend £90. Mind you, I did spend £68 recently on a secondhand set of 11 small bore gauges by M&W.
