LVLP Gun Pressure

Hi;

I have an FMT 3006 LVLP Spray Gun and need to check a few things regarding its use.

According to the FMT site the gun has a working pressure of 22 PSI. When spraying should the gun be set at 22 PSI? or does this alter dependent upon the type of paint being sprayed?
I am using Lechler 2 part Epoxy and Cellulose.

no, paint makes no difference as it has to be thinned to the correct viscocity anyway

22psi seems low to me mine run at double that

Clue is in the name.... LVLP

I find 2 pack epoxy needs more pressure no matter how much i thin it. Lower pressure works fine with the paint though.

My Epoxy did seem a bit spatters?

It might be down to the tip size. Mine is 0.8.

Have you got a gauge at the gun? The hose will drop pressure.

Too small tip just means the mist is fine and takes a long time to cover.

Been playing with it this morning. I have the main gauge at the compressor set to about 125PSI and then I have a gauge / water trap after about 2m of hose which is set tp about 80 PSI. With these set at these levels I can set the gun to roughly 30 to 20PSI. What I mean is that the gauge at the gun reads about 60PSI before I press the trigger. When I press the trigger the gauge immediately drops to about 30 and the gradually down to 20 whilst the trigger is still pressed. 30 to 20 takes about 2 - 3 secs.

I have been spraying this morning, and whilst there seems to be a lot of overspray it's laying on nice?

The drop from 30 to 20 should not happen. Try opening your gun air choke to max and adjusting your wall reg to give 22 at the gun. If it still droops off then I suspect your wall reg isn't much good.

I imagine it's just the stored pressure dropping due to it being a low velocity low pressure gun, if it was hvlp it woukd drop quicker

I know this is an old thread but seems people have missed the important bit. The person posting is spraying thick epoxy mastic, so 22 psi will NOT work. The gun pressure needs to be cranked right up to 40 - 60 psi depending on how much thinner is in it.
