Drill press tapping

Hi....
Do any of you guys use drill press for thred tapping. ... just been looking on the net and see a few different attachments... got loads of hand tapping sets but seem to have a problem of the tap rounding off ..I use the ratchet style ones to.....unless I just got a Friday night set made of sub standard material

You mean the square end of the tap rounds off where it goes into the tap wrench? I'd say that suggests the ones you have are a bit soft, or your not tightening up the tap wrench enough (or using too big a tap wrench for the size of tap perhaps)?

Can't say I've ever had one round off on me, though others may have experience of this

Yes the square end of the tap starts to round off. I don't use no force. A couple of turns in with cutting fluid then a turn back and so on.

I've never had any problems with the square on a tap rounding and I've taped 100,000's of holes

If it is a through hole then Spiral Point, blind hole then Spiral Flute.

I use YG Uncoated Combo ones from Cutwel, they often have them on special and they are excellent.
I use them for hand tapping, rigid tapping in the Chiron or Computurn Lathe and also in the manual lathe. Most of my materials are stainless but Alu and Steel are also fairly common and they work well for me.

all my imperial taps and dies are carbon steel but branded names and are fine even on stainless with cutting compound my metric set is hss machine mart and there decent well used and not a lot of cash

Here is a vid showing Spiral Point Tapping a through hole on the Chiron. This was just tapping Delrin but I put it up as it clearly shows the way Spiral Point taps work. They push the cut material ahead of them and out through the hole.

drill taps i like them, what really inpressed me with spiral taps was i had a hatefull job of drilling and tapping a horrific number of holes, in a lot of flat to basicly clamp sheets down. it was painfull untill i discoverd that m10 spiral tap worked very well in the battery drill, things went even better when i found that it would put up with being asked to chew through punched holes that were slightly undersized. the big shock was that i was expecting to breack or blunt a tap or few abuseing it like that so asked the boss to pick up a few more, but the 1st one finished the job and was still cutting

I am only tapping mild steel plate 10 15 mm max thickness m10 m12 size hole... must have a dodgy set of taps.

I like machine taps as a local machining firm change them on their machines every Saturday and throw them out as they produce vehicle components, they let me have what I want and I do them the occasional favour in return.
