Hi everyone,

I'm new here and was lead here by someone on another forum because i'm having issue with my welding, mainly due to not knowing exactly what I'm really doing.

Basically I've had my terrano project on the go for 4 years on & off, I moved from Scotland to northern Ireland last year leaving all my motoring friends behind, basically I no longer have anyone for guidance or to call upon when I get stuck.

I have a Sealey 210 mig which I acquired as payment about 3 years ago. I started running into issues when my gas ran out and i had to get the bottle refilled and set up again by myself, previously someone else has always set it up for me.

I taught myself how to weld on my chassis 3mm steel and now I'm working with 1mm steel building a bulkhead but I always seem to blow holes on thin steel and my weld don't look right either. they'll penetrate so that both sides are red hot but a friend said they look pourious as if my gas isn't set right (brittle)

can someone guide me where I'm going wrong....please don't get to technical because I don't understand the technical terms.

That looks very much like a gas problem. Are you working outside ? Gas getting blown away ? Check that you are getting gas to the nozzle, raise the COLD !!!!!! torch to near your ear either with wire feed tension right off / disconnected or else be EXTREMELY WARY OF THE WIRE FEEDING OUT. Do not poke yourself in the eye or ear with the wire feeding out. SOUNDS SILLY BUT THIS CAN EASILY HAPPEN !!!!! If you pull the trigger and do not hear the CONSTANT flow of gas look further you should easily be able to hear it.

Thanks, no I'm inside, did have the garage door open right enough but other weld are like this too, I should have plenty of gas in the bottle or so the regulator says. I have no idea how to stop the wire running or change the wire simple because I haven't had to yet so I guess I'll need to try not to poke myself

how far from the job do you have the end of the torch? welds would also look like this if you were too far away from the job so the gas dissipated.

There is a pressure roller which grips the wire to feed it up through the torch these usually have a simple finger knob to clamp and it is easily released to stop the wire feeding. If you do this then when you put it back you only want sufficient pressure to make the wire feed reliably too much is as bad as too little. When the wire is feeding you should be able to grip the wire hard as it comes out the torch and have the roller slip. DO NOT allow the wire to touch anything that is connected to the return lead (you might call it earth but that would be wrong) as otherwise it will arc

Get yourself a "peashooter" which tells you what the gas flow is at the end of the torch

I'm not familiar with the Sealey 210 (and never having tried before, I'm doubtful my efforts to upload a photograph of what I think might be a 210 interior will be successful).
However, if you open up the side panel, revealing your welding wire on its drum, you'll notice that as it runs off the drum it passes under a tensioner roller, the pressure of the roller on the wire may be controlled by a thumbwheel. Slacking off the thumbwheel reduces the pressure the wheel applies to the wire as it passes over the feed roller to the point whereby the wire will not feed.
Once you've worked out why there's no gas or insufficient gas to shield your weld and sorted it, the tension on the feed roller needs to be adjusted back to a satisfactory point.

Search on: 'How to adjust the feed roller tension on a mig welder', I'm sure there's a thread on here covering it and will save me having to repeat it.
