hardened shim

I need a hardened cam follower shim for a 99 Toyota diesel , Toyota only make up to 3.5 mm I need one a bit thicker from memory 3.8mm, could I make one and then harden it , what can I do?

They do a selection of shims to build up.
They are also available from Engine rebuild places.

Can't you use a combination of 2 that Toyota supply to get you up to 3.8mm?

You could use one of these cut to shape plus an appropriate toyota one.

they only do 2.5 to 3.5 , I will try an engine rebuild shop

What diameter is it? My thinking is you could use a hardened ejector pin to make what you want - they are cheap as companies sell a lot of them. I don't know what machine shop kit you have though a grinder and mill would probably be required.

Try Roughtrax they do a lot of Toyota parts including cylinder heads. They get them shimed when you buy a new one ready to go.
Don't put two in, the top one might jump out!

Hi, I can't help thinking that you're treating the symptoms and not the cause. If it's outside the normal range of shims then something else is worn, cam, follower, valve seat or even someone has ground a bit off the top of the valve at some time. Further investigation needed I think.

Yes putting two in could be trouble

Something wrong then, worn bucket or cam, unlikely to be valve unless stem ground

I know you say its a new head but would check the valve isn't bent and not seating right

its 1999 non turbo Toyota 2.4 diesel, I put the valves in so I don't think got bent

Any good automotive enginering shops will ask for your desired end size and iff its not available take one and grind the 2nd to give you the size your after.... my local shop will and have done for me in the past

roughtrax cant help, tried another couple of companies no go
I have some stainless steel sheet .9mm if I put a shim of that in under the original shim would it be any good or does it have to be hardened steel

if you must add a shim use a feeler gauge cut to size
