B.o.c argonshield exchange price

what's the going rate for B.O.C argonshield

went to change my bottle of B.O.C argonshield to day for the mig welder
i would be interested i knowing what people are paying these day for a exchange bottle.
i was charged
gas £26.54
fixed charges of £11.35
VAT £ 6.84

total paid for a exchanged bottle of argon / co2 £44.53

witch i think is a bit over the top
when i queried the fix charge of £11.35 + vat he did not know what it was for and his colleague just said it is some thing BOC just add ?
is this normal as the rental is paid once a year to Boc for the bottle
just seams not right to me ?

I think the "fixed charge" is the collection charge. You either pay them to deliver it, or pay them a smaller amount for the privilege of collecting it.

Yeah it's a charge they make for you to carry the bottle to them.

The fixed charge is the same £11.35 whether you take in one cylinder or ten, BOC and Air Products, are the only companies that I have dealt with where you have to pay for the privilege of being a customer, you could perhaps justify it if you had a quantity of cylinders to be sorted out and loaded with a forklift, but for a bloke who just wants to collect one cylinder Its a rip off.

Hi,

it's the 'handling charge' and Ipay the same on a co2 bottle, VB size.

So it costs around £21 to change the bottle but it's only once a year for me. With the annual rental it works out at around £1.50 per week and, so far, I haven't found any cheaper supply.

The fixed charge covers all admin charges incurred by the transaction, so if you swap 1 or 100 cylinders it is the same price, no matter what size of cylinder you are exchanging. The admin costs are charged by BOC & AP, and have to be shown as a seperate item on the bill, this is a legal requirement.

anyone in N.I. this might interest you that i've found a supplier filling Argon/CO2 (80%/20%) mix for £14 and NO RENTAL, you pay for the bottle (£80) and exchange it when you come back for a fill. PM me if you want details (northern ireland only)

Do you mean it is a legal requirement to show it, or to charge it? How do other companies manage to not charge?, or give a cylinder on deposit instead of hire with no pick up charge for re-fills.

It's a legal requirement (of gas majors) to charge it! - as per Bill Nihey's superb portrayal of Bankers in thread below
