I realise this is a little bit o-t for a 'welding' forum, but i know full well there a good few knowledgeable people on here, so i hope its ok to ask. Ive got a bead roller, a cheap and nasty one, that ive strengthened up to make it usefull, and used it a little bit, but the plan has always been to power it one day....
Ive now aquired, thanks to a good mate and lidl, a 240v winch, which is a damn good start. However, even with the reduction drive, it spins at 55rpm. Id like to get it down to about 6ish rpm, which i was planning to do using a intermediate shaft, and handful of gears. All perfectly doable, albiet, im not exactly sure where its all going to go, as im a little short on space......
Had a few beers and chatting with a couple of mates at the weekend, and we got chatting about it, and it was suggested that maybe a speed controller would be a decent idea, as it would also allow us to vary the speed (which would be massively useful for beading pipes etc, where you dont require such tight control) and allow me to ditch the intermediate shaft, and just run something like a 2:1 step down from the motor to the shaft, doing the rest by twidling a knob.
A quick search on ebay throws up a handful of varities available for anything from a few quid, up to lots, but googling suggests that only certain types of motor will work with such a beast. I tried my usual fall back position of speaking to a mate who deals in not dissimmilar stuff, but the general concess was, it might be ok, it might not depending on what type of motor it is.
One of the threads i found on google was a question on here, from about 6 years ago, but that referred to three phase motors etc (although the subsequent weld positioning build it linked kept me distracted for a while) so im not sure which way to go. On the one hand, i could just spend £10 and try it, fantastic if it works, no massive dramas if it doesnt, but £10 is still £10, and if its a no hope, then id rather not waste the money!! Also, it does occur to me, that its possible that the cheaper ones might not be suitable, but the slightly pricier ones might be just fine, again, knowledge that would be useful now if anyone knows!!??
Motor wise, its a parkside 500w winch, the same one lidl have on offer every now and then. If anyone has any insight into what will/will not work, id be very grateful!!
Cheers,
Pete
