fixed steady

i bought an old lathe 40 years ago and sold it on but kept the steady. its been rusting away since then . now I need one for a job I just dug it out 15 minutes later and it looks half decent after sandblasting it . just need to make a base for it now to suit the Harrison lathe . wont be anything fancy just functional from bits of metal I already have

A steady like that is worth its weight in gold forsome jobs. You just can't manage without one.

It's cleaned up nicely, its lucky that you put it in the 'it will come in useful someday pile'.

I wish I had one of those in my pile as it's one of the very few accessories missing from my Myford ML7!

Nice bit of re-appropriation. Are you bolting the steady to the adapter or welding it?

the adaptor fits in between the bed and steady and is all bolted down so didn't have to alter the steady . its finished but have too wait for the paint to dry to assemble it

Aah, that's handy having it reversible. It means you can work right up to the fingers either side as the need dictates

never thought of that learn something new every day

What are the three tips made from? I'd have thought they would have wheels on the ends but it looks like they would just be in a mild friction contact with the work piece?

The shaft supports are usually brass or bronze etc, Rollers would mark the shaft.

That happened me after carefully prepping & painting parts for our tractor. I went to the place I bought the paint and they tried to tell me it was due to the cold weather (it was September ) and refused to change it. After a week it was still tacky despite a few days indoors in the hotpress so I went back to the shop and eventually got the name of their supplier.
I contacted the supplier and they informed me that a faulty batch of paint went out that hadn't enough hardener added. Told me they would swap the paint no problem, just bring it back to the shop where I bought it. As it happened I was passing the suppliers a few days later and it turned out that they actually manufacture the paint on the premises.
They swapped the faulty tin plus I bought a few more 5l tins and a 20l drum of thinners at less than half the price the shop was charging! The paint is good quality industrial paint, perfect for machinery, roofs and steelwork. So by being awkward the shop has lost a customer and I've gained a valuable contact! As an aside, the paint shop is struggling and on the point of closing - little wonder!
