Wasn't meaning to pile in on you grim_d, it's just that many people don't even understand the difference between accuracy and resolution much less the requirements for very accurate measurement (and you can count me in the latter). I have a set of four standards that came with a 0-4" moore & Wright micrometer, but I have never actually used them. If I'm shooting for a 'fit' on a part I'll always have both parts so a comparative measurement is all I need. If I was working to a print - which in reality never happens - then that's a different matter altogether.
BTW bearing races make great standards, they are ground very accurately on width.
