When is a Philips screw not....

When is a philips screw not a philips?.....when its a JIS screw. Just goes to show we are never too old to learn and after over 40 years playing with Jap bikes i get to find this out

I did a thread a few months ago about them when trying to find impact version.

Learnt that little while back on that James May series where he took stuff to bits, apparently they use them a lot on Japanese guitars. They don't cam out when over torqued iirc like Phillips.

I've got a couple of cheap sets of bits that seem to work better on bike screws like brake master cylinder lids and carb float bowls. I find they always work if I put the bit in the screw head and give it a tap with my pinning hammer to seat it.

Question is how often do they use them now days. I have a feeling they just use Philips instead now?

Nuts and bolts are still often JIS standard but that is no problem unless you have lost a socket

My understanding is that all JIS screws have a dot on the head to identify them.
Fine when all is new and clean...

use wera diamond coated if u haven't the proper one. they don't cam out

Those should be OK as screwdriver bits but probably wouldn't survive an impact driver, the only impact set I've found so far is in the States - link

shame i didnt know before my inlaws are here now from the usa for a month they could have packed them,

I could always buy them and get them to send them to me under the radar because import duty sucks

I said that yonks ago on a resto thread.

You don't need to send off to the states for em, you can pull the + point rods out of a crap Japanese tool kit supplied with the bikes, ditch the useless handle, TIG/MIG spot/Braze the rods into 1/4" drive sockets and Robert is some bloke that knows your dad and Grannie.

Need to prep the driver rods and the sockets as they are Galvoed/Chromed, pretty ezy to get em true as I found they fitted into the 1/4 drives snugly.
