Any wood working plane experts lurking?

Thank you for all your help. But sadly the plane needs to have deeper repair.

I acquired a better blade, the original should of been good for rough work. That was my plan.

But the best laid plans of mice and men.
There is a crack running from about 11 o clock from the frog adjusting screw to the left had side (viewed from the rear) frog securing screw.

I couldn't work out why the frog would move after setting up. Until I saw a liquid leaking. So striped the paint and behold a crack.

Oh well.

In my college days, I used to make beer money surface grinding planes for the fine craft and design students. They'd buy a new stanley and leave it in the box for six months for the casting to settle down. The most I ever took off one to get it flat was 0.014", which surprised me.

if it was cast iron your supposed to leave it outside un machined and let it go rusty and settle then machine

Yes, I think British Leyland when through a phase of being unable to keep up with demand and used engine blocks before they'd had long enough. Wasn't a great move.

Hi, i remember reading an article sometime ago that a racing team were buying up secondhand BMW 2002 engines to rebuild as race engines because in use they had been through so many heat cycles that they were completely stress relieved. Because they were a popular engine they ended up paying fortunes for them to get them.

When I worked in the foundry, castings for some customers were stored outside for months before being dispatched.

From memory, Stanley Planes were/are sold fairly"unfettled". They are OK (ish) for rough carpentry, and some second fixing jobs, but they need sorting for most stuff.

First off is getting the blade a decent edge, then trying to true up the sole plate (I spent hours with bit of plate glass, grinding paste, New Age music on the music box and chanting Hari Krishna truing up the sole plates-or trying to-Hari Krishna got close to becoming Hari Kari).

In the end, I bought a Tormek, and a book on sharpening by an english bloke Phil ? (somebody will know). You have to sort the back of the blade as well.

The tools worked like silk, and the edge lasted for yonks-even on oak and green stuff.

In the end, my plane blades and chisels were almost as sharp as my wit (well, nearly almost)

There are general bench planes, smoothing planes, planes for tough grains/end grain work etc.

Metalworking is a relief for me know after all that

The modern offerings from Stanley leave much to be desired, however, vintage tools, and especially the Bedrock options are superb to say the least.

yeah the modern stuff does need some work, most of mine are modern, and a few hours was spent refining them.

and the back of the blades do take ages to get to a suitable finish at the cutting edge. I ended up using using 4000 grit japanese waterstone for sharpening the blades on. As for sharpness they end up being razor sharp as you can shave the hairs off your arm as a quality check.

Hi, Is the use of water stone the accepted practice now? Or the American guy in the video using wet and dry? My father always used an oil stone, one side for the plane blades the other for chisels, and I just carried on doing the same.

IT’S ALIVE!!!!


Today I am a happy Vark.

I was being nosy at friends place and found the body and frog of a Stanley wood plane. Oddly rust free.

No handles, no blade, no screws, but a mouse is no homeless.

So away it went.

A few hours work, a few pints off coffee and behold.

ZOMBIE PLANE!!!

I transplanted the good bits from my original and set it up.

Frog adjusting screw is a 1/4" Whitworth, so thank you to who sent me the link with the plane details.

It all depends on what quality you want,I still use a vintage norris for smoothing, [not made any more]if you want real quality then Lie Nielson but your talking£200plus,for most of my work i use stanley smoother & a jointer for larger stuff,the main thing is to get the blade sharp, most use diamond stones but I still finish mine off on a white arkansas stone then a leather strop & as stated above if it cuts your arm hair you've cracked it.

It is worth making sure that the backing iron sits tight to the blade when its screwed up tight & oilstoning it so it fits properly, I usually set the distance to edge of blade at about 1mm, any more & it defeats the point of having a backing iron as a chip breaker. Nice set of planes you have there!
I have a fair selection too, the most prized are a Norris jack plane that was my Dads 21st birthday present & a Norris A5 that i found on the dump!
