As the bench is nearly done, back on the lookout for a nice vice.

These are my picks of todays ebay offerings.

Need to add another £30 for shipping to Spain.

I realise you have started painting it, but add a piece (well, two at a right angle) of box under the plate for the vice, ideally so the vice will bolt through the box and plate. It gives a tremendous increase in strength and is well worth it and you will probably need it - vices are for giving things a good tug and it needs to be solid.

Thanks Bill someone has also mentioned this earlier. I'm not 100% sure the vice will go on this bench yet and no idea where the mounting holes will be. But if i do i will definitely reinforce that plate. This bench will have a wooden top so I think I may put the vice on the welding bench.

Finished the painting today. And went to get a piece of counter top.

Now more decisions cut it flush to the frame of leave an overhang?

I was going to cut the rounded bit off the counter top. But i'm going to need an overhang at the back or it wont sit flush against the wall.

The bench is 60cm wide and the counter top is 65cm. One option would be cut it to length and use it as is with the rounded edge.

Thanks for the offer gaz. Don't think a vice will be going on this bench. Hopefully i have one by the time i get the next bench done.

As it is wood screw an upstand to the back , can put tool holders etc on will allow the bench to meet the wall , also give you the overhang at front, don't glue it so it can be easily changed ,

After trimming the rounded edge off i'm left with an overhang of 3.5cm at the front and i've left 5cm on the sides. I'm going to put another bench next to this one so maybe i should trim the sides down a little more?

Should i break the edge of the counter top?

Unless you're going to be beating things on the edge I'd leave it.
Worst case if you are making a mess is that you trim it down later?

Some of the edges were already marked so i rounded them slightly with some sand paper. Looks ok actually. Started applying the varnish.

Once i start on the bench to go next to it i may trim the sides down we will see.

looks great but id have cut them all first then tried them to fit first then if needed cut off whats needed after all that then you can coat it with what you have doing it your way just wait until you may have to trim it down then recoat it again

The problem is gaz i've still not decided where to put them .

I really wanted two benches on this wall and the welding bench opposite as i don't feel like moving the extractor.

If i cut the draws off the other one i can make a small bench which will fit next to this one. The draws wont need much work but i will need to make a side panel for the cupboard.

As i need to move out of this house as the rent is killing me. I'm not going to worry about what fits where and make another bench the same.

While i've been waiting for the varnish to dry i've been thinking about the vice situation.

Will something this work? Will probably struggle to get two strong bits of box which slide together. Anything they don't have i have to order 6 meters of.

This way i can mount my crappy vice and don't have to drill into the nice counter top too many times.

It wouldn't be my first choice - the lack of direct vertical support means that it's going to be pretty springy when you're whacking or sawing whatever you're holding in it.
I suppose you could make a leg for it, that possibly slides out, but I can't help thinking you're making it all a bit over-complex rather than just fitting it to the worktop (bolted through the box section, too, ideally).

I'm afraid your worktop will never again look as good as it did on the first day so you may as well get used to it

I too don't like it being stuck out if it's going to be used for most vice jobs (hitting an pulling on).
A sliding vice even worse.

I know some mechanics who have vices that lift out of the van and drop onto the towbar. It's great compared with nothing but they're always loose and wobbly.
