Hope you get the desired look you want BB. I can't do it. I know how to get the desired look but I'm not neat or consistent enough.
I'm pretty good at tig like tig if that helps

thats the thing, i appear to be crap at mig like tig, and im not very good at tig like tig either lol...most of my tig welds look like bad mig welds but atleast they penetrate lol

just make a similar pattern using a drill will be sunken instead of raised

I remember reading a post on the USA welding web, that "ZT fab" that does truly amazing mig like tig, uses a pull technique and does not use machine pulsing or pulsing using the torch trigger, I believe that he has his own web site now,

Do the spot welding you were doing but instead of waiting for it to cool do one of the other three sides, keep working your way round till your done

If you have a Tig why not get an industrial size bottle so practice is more affordable, put in the hours so you are good enough to get reasonable looking welds, and then use Tig for your job rather than try to make Mig look like Tig, which seems a good deal more difficult than Tig (unless you have wire feed pulse)?

Because I don't have tig...
i used to do a lot of car mig work and people would always want this look, you have to drag the torch and not push it. hold the torch at about a 45% angle. my method was basically a continuous cycle of,,
Lay a tack weld
as it cools move the torch half the width of your original tack.
Lay another
and so on and so fourth
best thing is to put on some decent music and take your time. you want to fall into a trace.
you could clamp a heat sink to the rear if you just want to smash the job out.
I never got on with the pulse feature on my old mig set,

Sorry thought I noticed you referring to Tig welds not being very good in an earlier post, and assumed you had a machine?

no, i can tig weld to the point where i have strong welds, but not well enough that i can stack dimes...i dont have a tig, just know roughly how to do it

Ok...............Tig is really pretty easy, and if you are ok with gas Tig should come no problem at all.

Never tried gas...never referenced it either...tig may be easy for you, maybe not for me...I'm sure there are things I find easy that you way struggle with too

I think this line caused the confusion depending on on how you read it
i dont have a tig set up and my tig skills arent good enough for it anyway
you meant you don't own a tig
but it can also be read that you do have one but its not set up

technically, and this is just to confuse matters, both are true...i dot have a tig welder, but i could set my XTI up to tig...i have a torch now but cant be bothered with another bottle in the garden and i have no consumables...lol

All forms of welding are directly related to controlling heat, and personally I think gas welding is perhaps the very best way to learn heat control. Sadly though the greed of gas co's means gas welding is today very expensive, and certainly not something for beginners wanting to learn. I get the feeling anyone can Tig weld, its simply a matter of having the time and money to practice a fair bit.

thats like saying anyone can fly a plane if they have the time and money to practice...obviously if someone ha enough time and money the they can learn to do it...thats not what is, or atleast was, being discussed here though is it?

Put it like this, you would find getting the basics of Tig welding a good deal easier, than being able to Mig like Tig on a machine without pulse.

I am not saying that isn't the case...what I am saying is I want to be able to try and do mig like tig rather than blow money on a bottle of Argon, buy consumables and filler rods and then waste God knows how much time learning to stack dimes just to put a border around a name plate...
If I had the facility to do that I would have done that...there is a reason that I started this thread and you seem to be the only person pushing the idea of learning to tig weld to a degree where I could stack dimes...
Other people have been helpful and offered advice on technique to achieve what I want, you just seem hell bent on saying the only way forward is with a tig or a pulse mig...I just can't see how any of these suggestions are helpful to the situation I have described in previous posts...
Now, back to the original subject...I had a quick play today between other things and spent some time marking out the positions for a series of tacks and did them in such a way that I could jump back and forth to keep heat down...it worked but not as well as I'd hoped...then I tried Richards suggestion of the forward/backwards motion and it is by far the best result yet, it's by no means perfect but it certainly does come close to what I want...practice is on the cards for Friday and I have a few bits of 5mm angle iron to practice on so hopefully I can get a bit better
