any tips /help for diy exhausts

i need to make up some car exhaust parts with the car up on stands

looking for tips on hows it best to proceed ....as in how do you support it all enough to get some tacks on so you can remove it and bench weld it ?

what about joining straight bits ...any tips to get it dead straight

Why not use the old system as a pattern? All bends will be same place, as will mountings and general lay out.

I used to use a length of angle about a metre long and clamp the two lengths of tube into it, always came out as good as I could want.

Yup, best way I've found is to use some jubilee clips to hold the angle to the pipe.

As you build it and dry fit it to the car just hold it up with bricks and bits of timber including hanging off its soon to be hangers and get it looking level and straight...once happy then tack and pull it out to fully weld. Thats what ive always done

I use a couple of pairs of cheap mole grips with a bit of angle about 12mm welded to each jaw, as clamps. The angles about an inch long.

Always make sure what you put on will come off again. I spent many hours making a trike exhaust from scratch, a v twin, the pipes came together and twisted through under the seat, round the prop shaft. Was very careful, in out modify...you know the storey. When reassembling after paint poweder coat etc, couldnt get the bloody thing back in.

It ended up with an extra joint in the end.
