Cheap light rwd

my younger brother is currently driving a Suzuki ignis awd but he wants something fun.

He has never been into cars at all but he has asked me if I can find him a rwd as he wants to learn how to control and slide a car about.

Now he is just about to turn 18 so cheap insurance is the main thing, anything else can be sorted by me.

I'm thinking he doesn't need much power as long as the car is light.

Any suggestions?

He wants to "drift" ! Point out that if he does it on public road then he'll quickly loose his licence and at his age (can't even have been driving 12 months)that will probably mean having to take an extended test after ban period.
Best thing to look for, that is cheap, is Volvo 340 with 1.4 engine.
To be honest you might be better persuading him to spend the money on a skid pan driving course and track day in something like a Caterham 7 to "get it out of his system".

I'd say that every one should learn to drive in a Marina. Then you lear about car control.

But the only car that fits that bill cheaply is an MX5

But I share compo's concerns about talking him out of this. The most likely way to "learn" what a RWD car does is by exiting the highway backwards at speed into a ditch or a tree

Like I said, if you do it in a Marina, you ain't going very fast

Done that between Livingston and Shotts when my company car, a Sierra hit a patch of black ice and I reversed into a tree at 30mph. The nice thing about leased company cars is they just ask where is it and where do want the replcement delivered to?.

BTW Police regard car parks that have public access (supermarket, retail park, etc) exactly the same as the road when it comes to committing the offence of drifting - which is classed as either Careless or even Dangerous driving.
Also remember that rear tyres aren't going to last long - and they aren't cheap anymore.

That was me, I turned 17 in early December 1982 it snowed a lot that winter and my Dad had a Marina

I got stopped after 'drifting' my volvo estate around a (one way street) corner when I was 18.

I was going to say a TVR vixen, I bought one when I was about 19, insurance wasn't too bad, it only had a 1600 cross flow and cost me about 800 quid but needed a bit of work, this was back in 81 and it was a '69 model.

At the slightest hint of rain, roundabouts turned into skating rinks, I only used to drive it if I had brown trousers on.

I sold it to buy a bathroom after renovating it, I got about 1200 for it, now they are 20K+
