Atkins powered hacksaw

My gf's father has an EC Atkins powered hacksaw plonked outside the workshop covered with a tarp, he's adiment it's going to the scrap man as he has no use for it, too much hassle and too slow he said it does cut true and straight, and all it needs is a blade. So I went off googling, only to find very limited amounts of info about these saws. I think it'd be a nice thing to restore, admittedly I'd never use it, already have bandsaws in the workshop, but was just wondering if anyone on here had heard of them or had any info on them? Will have to double check but think the model but I thinks it's a no.12? Cheers lads

Just measure the distance between the jaws, get a blade and get on with it would be my advice. Power hacksaws are relatively slow, but you can just leave them to get on with it, and they won't deafen you either.

Could offer it up on here even if just for free or a small amount, it's horrible to see these things go for scrap unless it's jiggered.

Don't worry, don't think I'd be able to watch something like that go to scrap, really have a soft spot for older kit, everything we use at home in the workshop is old, old Harrison lathe and aciera f3 mill being just two.. Was wondering really whether it was worth restoring as itd prob just be sold off after!

You'd probably find it will make itself far too useful to sell...

Already have a decent bandsaw that I can walk away from while it's cutting so I don't think this little saw would see too much use! That said I've never used one, and if I had the space free itd probably be a neat thing to drop in the corner for chopping the odd bit and piece when the mood takes me

The good thing about hacksaws is the blade are cheap and last forever. I've goes an evolution TCT saw and a Clarke abrasive chop that never get used now.
And the hacksaw is so accurate it could cut the T shirt off an ant.

That's another advantage. A normal sized hacksaw will happily spend half the morning chomping its way through a piece of 8" round bar and it will come out pretty much true. A bandsaw is likely to go walkies on a job like that, not that I dislike bandsaws, I love 'em for chopping up 10mm square bar etc, and often put several together at a time, but I wouldn't trust it to cut pipe for example.

Are hacksaws actually that much better on pipe? The amount I do with round stock wouldn't be enormous so keeping an eye on it isn't usually a problem, especially considering most work I do with pipes are for motorsport so require tweaking and notching.. That said perhaps I could be convinced now to find a spot to plonk this saw

mechanical hacksaws are crap on thin tube the blades are 2 coarse and bite. anything thicker than 1/8 th is ok thin stuff is better using a bandsaw

ok if you have a fine blade and a controllable feed rate though. I used to have the same problem on thin walled pipe on a big industrial bandsaw. That too had a warning not to use it on thinner than 1/8".

This is how accurate they are,. I cut a blade width slither off some 40mm round.............
