Hi. Anyone have any experience of the Oxford range of pulse migs? Will initially be used to restore an old classic car but will then be taken into service to replace an old Lincoln 350 that is used daily and has been for the last 18 years. Liking the idea of single and 3 phase, as the place I rent at the moment has 3 phase but if I ever get a shed of my own, I'm not sure that 3 phase would be available. Also liking the fact that transformer based as I don't change equipment regularly. Any other suggestions welcome.

Anything that comes out of the Tec Arc factory is brilliant, the Oxford pulse MIGs are no exception. Good service from Les & Richard @ Tec Arc too so if you've got any questions give them a call & they're on the case ASAP.

Is a transformer based pulsed machine a new addition to the oxford range, the portamigs appear to be very well built from what i have seen.

Thanks Tom. I've heard a lot of good things about tec arc and the Oxford brand, actually had an old oil cooled Oxford that used to belong to my dad until recently. Just hadn't heard anything about their pulse machines.

Relatively new, Tec Arc released them to us distributors around 6 months ago.
Not overly new but newer than the rest of the range.

Tom. Have you sold any, heard any feedback. Have no experience with pulse, easy enough to set up?

I've not personally sold any but others within the company may have.
I know that the feedback of the other "chopper" PWM migs they do that I have sold is outstanding. Very nice weld, minimal spatter and with the right user can achieve MIG that looks like TIG.

It's a relatively easy to use set from the looks of things, I'll get some more info about it for you tomorrow if you want.

That would be great. The whole synergic thing would not be of much importance to me for normal mig use, but as I say, I have no experience of pulse. So wandering if works ok straight out of box and can just be fine tuned as I learn how best to use it. I haven't been able to find any first hand information about it on net and don't think there are any local suppliers that have in stock to try for myself. Also wandering about possible reliability. Old transformer based Lincoln mig still on the go after 18 years where as I've gone through 2 inverter based plasma cutters (hypertherm). Is a transformer based machine more reliable or does all the other electronic wizardly make an inverter based machine just as reliable. I realise this is speculation but interested in opinions.

Right i've managed to find the full spec sheet/ info leaflet which I'm assuming will be be quite useful. I'll post it below.
Not many will keep these in stock as they're not a very common selling item so you might struggle to try before you buy.

Transformers are usually a lot simpler than inverter machines which means less to go wrong, however with this transformer machine its going to have all sorts of stuff on the PCB to do the pulse.. Maybe a possibility of something going wrong but if Richard has designed it I doubt there will be much wrong with it.

Nearly all my machines are Tec-Arc/Oxford. Got a mig, ac/dc tig, wire feeder, plasma and just got one of the new model multi process machines to keep in the van. Looking to buy a pulse mig as well in the near future and an Oxford will be my first choice.

There's not a lot of difference between them and both are transformer based machines. Oxford have the wire spool horizontal, Portamig has a vertical wire spool. The Oxford machines have capacitors added for better weld quality but the later Portamig machines now have capacitors fitted too so will be the same. Oh, and the Oxford is green and the Portamig is red.

I have the Portamig 236s which I bought earlier this year from the forum sponsor that's listed at the top of the forum. I find it an excellent machine. I think it just comes down to what deal you can get at the time. The Portamig came with an Euro torch. The machines are built to order.
