Help with black paint choice please

Hi guys well got my gates hung yesterday and painted them with No Nonsense Red Oxide Primer from Screwfix, lovely stuff excellent coverage and smooth drying. Set off this morning with a tin of black Hammerite gloss and was very disappointed in the result, very poor coverage so I have left it to get advice as to what is best. Really I would like to give them a coat of black gloss that will cover in one go, what would you all recommend please.

I would recommend getting those hinge pins sorted fast or you won't have any gates to paint

Aldi metalcare black gloss is excellent but is not a single application paint, usually three coats to work correctly.

POR-15?

POR 15 is not UV stable, no good for a top coat unless it's out of daylight like under a vehicle. It's also recommended to use on bare metal, technical data here.

crown black gloss , solo , one coat ive used on metal door and gates and also wood as its a mixture of uses with the paint

I would recommend getting those hinge pins sorted fast or you won't have any gates to paint

Aldi metalcare black gloss is excellent but is not a single application paint, usually three coats to work correctly.

The hinge pins have bolts through and a weld to secure and the bolts have a weld on them so they can't be undone but thanks anyway

Can be brushed or sprayed and would almost certainly do the job with a single coat................in the old days they used this type of thing to paint vehicles, and sometimes still do on classics which need original type finish.

plus 2 for hibuild just a couple of coats. it will hand paint but spray is faSTER

And others supply

Wear eye protection the thinners are nasty if they get in your eyes

u can thin it with cheap celly 5 quid a gallon

I've switched from Hammerite to Tractol for all my workshop gear, and happy with the results brushed or sprayed. Can be thinned with 10% xylene for spraying, which is way cheaper than hammerite thinners at 50%

Xylene it's in the paint to begin with
Your eyes have no defence against it so flushing is just a pre- hospital job - wear that eye protection from before you open the lid

My friend sprayed his bike frame with it and as BS says, he just used cheap cellulose gunwash thinners and it came out perfect. Best thing to do is try a spot of paint and add whatever you are thinning it with and if it "curdles" it won't work.

I have 25L of cheap thinners for cleaning my guns I will give it a bash gotta be quicker, neater and more through spraying it

I was thinking the same thing.

Hammerite goes on ok thinned a little 20% and warmed up. If you don't do that it doesn't cover or spread well if used straight from the tin unless you apply it really heavily and then it runs.
