Because as said before, the digital one seems finiky to get a number off, the one i was using, the numbers never seemed to stop moving.

I bought one of the digital "Vernier" jobbies from Lidl, its OK maybe not the best finished but it does what it says on the tin. As a matter of interest I asked the standards tech' at work to test it. It turned out to be just as accurate as the very expensive ones used by the quality control guys, the build quality isn't as good but for less than a tenner who can complain.

I find they are good, but the cold kills them. I left them out on the bench several overnight several times and they didn't work after that.

no nonsense just works, don't need my reading glasses battery lasts ages and display is stable and repeatable. Handy being able to set zero at any point and measure from there - I never bother with my old analogue ones that cost three times as much.

I found similar with my micrometer, it doesn't have an on/off switch so any movement turns it on until it auto powers off once it's wasted more battery than necessary

I have had the ownership of two digital mics. A cheap one, no where near the quality of the cheap callipers. It went in the bin, the other one bought second hand is mituyoto a quality piece of kit, work well and is reliable. Wasnt cheap though.

Think m&w do a cheap digital micro. But Ebay is a good bet. They seem to sell cheap on there even good condition mitutoyo and starrett.

Funny thing is I was at work and we had a crane mechanic out doing some fairly involved work on the hydraulics of a great big crane we have. I noticed he had a digital caliper in his pocket. I asked him - that's not from Lidls is it? Yep - he got it for a fiver as well ages ago and swore by it.
One thing to watch for - I made the mistake of buying a cheapo "composite" digital caliper from fleabay. Turns out "composite" is another word for cra*py plastic. Still works OK for most stuff where 0.1mm accuracy is sufficient and I won't fret when I break it. I do have proper ones for accurate work though.

I've got two Mitutoyo calipers - one I've had thirty years which is plain vernier in both inch and mm, you can read both easily (inches in decimal mind).
Recently I got a digital version of same from the cheapest new retailer I could find, and then got another the same from eBay for a friend. I like the digital one as much as the original, use both, they're just in different places! One word of warning though, there are a few stories around of the digital version being copied a lot and sold as 'new' on eBay, I bought one that was obviously used with good photos I could compare with mine.

I want one to check fishing line diameter. Plus for use in workshop
That's would be ideal for my fishing line. I have normal ones I use in the workshop to be honest. Now to find one.

The cheap ones from Aldi are good enough for rough work, I would never want to use one if i was in a machine shop churning out hi-spec stuff.
Just out interest is it possible to calibrate the cheap ones from Aldi? We use precision shims for some of our jobs and was thinking about using them to check it.

You could use slip gauges if you have access to a set.

The shims we use are quite precise. We use laser alignment kit on coupled shafts and we use the shims to get within 0.01mm at the coupling. the shims vary from 0.05 to 2mm so was thinking I can do some checks using those and then calibrate against the shim. I think the accuracy of the aldi micrometers are 0.01..

I must admit I don't have a digital one at home but they are quite handy at work sometimes, especially being able to see you measurement easily when dealing with something larger or unwieldy.
