That's one option but I can't even find bearer plates on eBay or screwfix etc.. lol

What about using steel box section for the bearers, and tek screw the decking down?
Redoxide + car underseal + waxoyl inside should see it lasting 20+ years even if you dont galv it?
Maybe a few 13mm holes to stop it filling with water?

What about not using wooden decking, you have a good solid base. Why not use the imitation plastic decking, the rot aint a problem. Earlier when i said id used 5 mm angle iron, this was just as a spacer to make sure the deck hoards were evenly gapped. Screw board down, plonk 2 bits of angle iron on, push next board up against it, screw down then remove angle iron ready for the next board

Iff you want to sit the timber on the flags then fix some upvc facia boarding to the underside 1st...no water getting sucked into the timber then

Good call but too expensive. I already have free 5 inch bearers . I should have been a Yorkshire man.

Hi, Take up a line of slabs and put the 5" bearers down on the hardcore with a dab of mortar to level if needed. Any rain or water will then drain away through the hardcore. That way you could get away with every other line and you don't have to dig up the whole area.

If laying joists onto stone paving just use bits of roof slates to keep the joists fully off the ground and also to level the joists. For a small thickness like you want to use you will need to keep the slates quite close together. I'd also support the noggins and keep the space between the joists quite narrow.

FWIW whatever you do, decking is only a quick tidy up.. after a time it will look bad and need replacing.Of course that time can be anything from months to years depending on how you fit it. Next to a door like that if they end up slippery they are a nuisance.

If you plan to be there a long time my suggestion is bite the bullet and re do the flags properly.

or rest them on thoe plastic packers they go from 1-10mm so you can level it easy or create your fall so the water run away from the house

Yeah either or I suppose. I had to do something similar in our kitchen after knocking down a wall to make a larger kitchen. The old kitchen side had old stone slabs but was lower than the other side which had timber joists. I used old roof slates packed under the new smaller joists to level it properly. Worked a treat and it’s been like that for almost 10 years now with no issues and still as solid as the day it was put in.


But as GW8IZR says if it’s possible to raise the old slabs that could be your best option. If it low traffic then you could get away with just packed hardcore. I normally go OTT though and it’s 150mm hardcore followed by 50mm concrete. The area in the pic below is about 70m2 in total and my wife made about ¾ of the concrete which she didn’t enjoy at the time but is kinda proud of it now though.

I built over some old paving, I just stapled dpc to the joist and sat it on the old paving, I levelled it up and packed cement into the gaps at 6" ish spacing or sat it on bricks or bits of broken slab bedded into cement depending on the gap size.
