12v battery snapped spade terminal

Just thought I would ask the knowledgable chaps on this site as to wether my battery is salvageable or not ? It`s a fairly new battery but i dropped it and broke off the + spade battery terminal that is heat sunk into the battery. Can I clean up the snapped off lug and solder on a replacement or does the heatsink have to be melted off to do the repair properly or is it scrap.

Is there enough "meat" left to file it flat, drill it and attach the lead with a big self tapper?

Some pics would be useful. The battery type or size is not mentioned. Is it lead acid, lithium ion, NiMH?

not much left above the heatsink bit unfortunately. It`s a Ultramax 2.2kg 12v 7.2ah sealed lead acid battery. underneath that it has NP7-12. if needed i`ll add pics later but im off out with the family for the day so can`t reply till later.
There is no post to drill or add anything to just a a spade type lug that snapped off above the heatsink.

think you're wasting your time, unless you can get a really good joint, you'll always have a risk

If I was desperate to save one like that I'd carefully drill/pick out the potting compound to expose enough of the terminal to solder a wire onto then re-pot it with resin. A new Yuasa (decent brand) can be had for £12-£14 so is it worth the trouble?.

As it's a nearly new battery, if usage conditions are not too arduous, I'd second the suggestion of soldering a wire to the end of the broken spade terminal, plus some strain relief, if necessary. I wouldn't recommend soldering the remains of the old spade back onto the broken end, though.

dig It out clean the tab and solder a spade conector on to it

Yes please I`ll pm you my address. As it`s a nearly new battery and it will not be under constant heavy use I`d much rather rescue it than throw it away. Cost is`nt the issue but we seem to be living in a bit of a throway society and I`d rather repair & learn than just go out and buy another.

littel die grinder makes short work of the potting compund then solder a lead back on, thats worked for me in the past

i personally would solder it after removing some of the potting compound, but thats probably becasue i do that sort of thing as part of my job anyway...

they arent expensive, arent particularly special and certainly arent rare so i would probably just replace if i wasnt in a position where i have an entire team of people at my feet that know how to properly repair batteries

that heat sink compound is probably just coloured araldite, we use it on 90% of our batteries and it dries like rock, easy to chip away with the right tool.

we only really use it as thread lock but alsio gets used on our underwater batteries as a sealant for certain types of manifold

That`s handy to know. Is the compound/araldite/potting compound the same as they use on the sea doo underwater self propelled scooter ?

wouldnt know as ive never been into under water scooters...if i had seen this about 2 hours ago i could have got you the data sheet for it...sat at home now though and not back in til saturday
