Towing over 3.5 ton

Anyone got any ideas on what’s the best way to cart a 4.5 ton digger around. I have been using a tractor and small low loader but a couple of jobs have come up recently that it would take too long in the tractor to make it worthwhile. So without needing to get an operators license is there a way round it?

That will likely come into the realms of tachographs and then o licence etc.

I would contact your local dvsa office, or certainly have a look at the website as the rules have changed alot in the last year or so.

Yep, it certainly will... tractor is the best option by far for towing this kind of thing...

yup, latest regs mean you need cpc,o licence etc unless proven exempt, which you might be, check it out as suggested above.Arther

I think it depends on when you got your license, I did a 5 day course, no doubt some one on here will know latest regs.

Hi, You have to do 5 x 7 hour modules and they cost about £100 each, if you're doing it off your own bat then contact one of the driver training companies. You'll also need a digital tacho card, even if you're using paper discs and that's £40. Plus if you haven't got one a photocard licence because they use the photo on it for all three.

Thanks chaps, I thought that might be the case. Yes I have got C1 entitlement but going down the operators license route has a lot of B****cks associated with it – and a lot of outlay. I was kinda hoping for the magic wand… Oh, well. Now, I wonder how much I can get a JCB Fastac for……..

If you are not using the digger for your own agricultural work you could be breaking the law carrying it round on the tractor and trailor. One of our local cowboys does it all the time and is going to come a cropper.

Yup the last few years regs wise has put a complete kybosch on self employed like myself towing trailers with a small truck, effectively putting quite a few out of business, through no safety reasons,just cost effectiveness.Arther

Seriously, tow whatever you need with an 'agricultural machine', it will solve most of your problems... Ford 7810 with a hot injection pump and big turbo, oversized tyres, job done...

Quite a few got seized for reasons like running on red, no operators licence, no tacho, incorrect insurance, distance from "base", etc. At the time it was highlighted, as you say, if not being used for your own agricultural work them the same rules apply as any other vehicle.

It comes under the old VOSA, now DVSA and it can be very expensive if you are caught out.

your pritty much screwed if you want to use a 7.5 T for moveing a 4.5 T digger. the best payload + body allowance i think you'll find is around 5T . so with a very very light bed with no loading ramps sides or anything you chould in theory chucki it on the back of one of the jap offerings with no buckets or mud.

you'd then need to tow a trailer to put the ramps and the buckets in. and it' be a track the machene up the trailer then up ramps onto the 7.5T

my suggestion would ether be buy a smaller machene or buy a bigger one to make the hasstel of moveing it worth it

17.5T train weight on your average 7.5T would that actualy move ?

But then he needs an operator licence and HGV which he says will cost too much in his previous post.
