quick poll to make my mind up

I will hopefully be in a position to buy a mig within the next few days/the next weeks.

cant make my mind up on what i want, whether it be an inverter, a transformer machine, a little 160 amp unit or something bigger. i already have a 160 amp stick welder so a hobby type mig wouldnt stop me welding thick stuff if i needed to.

so, what would you chose for car repairs and light fab knowing you could easily switch to stick for heavier stuff?

i have also considered that the GYS would need another little kit to allow use of gas and that has been factored in to the price...all of the above are roughly the smae price as each other

Don't forget the Yang Ste 185GT/SuperXL/GTE sold by Yung Ho Carpet and Patio Furniture supplies, although I have heard a rumour they are made in China so spares could be an issue.

that has been at the back of my mind...my stick welder is an inverter and so far so good...i suppose the upside to having another inverter is that if my stick welder goes bang i can use the mig as a stick unit but if the mig goes bang im stuck with just a stick welder again...

the GYS and R-tech are level pegging now...

ive spent the last 3 days looking at specs and comparing each to another and to be honest im fed up of looking at numbers now, so as soon as i have the money (£600 to cover welder gas and wire etc) im just going to but whatever has the most votes...

i must admit i was expecting atleast a few votes for the parweld...

I voted parweld because I have a parweld mask and it's alright.

Apart from that, there's almost no difference between them at this price point

the only major difference i can see are the inverters obviously do stick too...and the r-tech has a bit more punch to it...the gys looks a good unit and the front panel will be handy going back to mig as my last mig only had 2 settings, hi-low so was set once and that was that really...

I had the gys smartmig for a few months (sadly had to sell to raise some finances) and found it excellent, and although other a transformer set isn't actually that heavy to lift around.

I can see the appeal of the inverters most definitely but maybe fragile!?

I would buy another smartmig tomorrow if I could.

I think the parweld has a higher minimum setting but I could be wrong (normally am!).

Just my two penneth but I voted gys

well no, but it gives a rough idea of how many have what...and if more people have a certain unit and have no complaints then id say its worth a shot...obviously this is counting on people airing their bad views on a unit they have had that has gone bad but as a rough guide it will do to set them into a group of popularity

i think they are all 300amp low end excpet the CWS which claims 20 but they would all do for my purposes i think

Just the same as a poll of the most popular cars would result in small hatchbacks as the winner, not much good if you have a family of six

Poll's have their uses I suppose but I am never a fan of them, too easy to give false impressions.

I am with PDG, unless you have thoroughly tried all of them its difficult to tell how each actually perform in the real world, figures dont tell you how they actually work although if manufacture s were 100% honest it would give a good expectation of what a machine can do.
there is another mig you should consider, its in one of the other questions what mig, tom orrow gives it the thumbs up, but as he sells kit you should obviously use your own judgement if suitable for you, and no thats no critisism of tom orrow what so ever, I watched the you tube thingy on it seems pretty good kit.

ps. I bought a second hand tec arc 181, price I paid would be in your budget, funny squat looking thing,no awards there, but really pleased with it, I get on with it from lowest to highest setting, basic transformer kit so pretty bullet proof, and so simple to get good results.Dont rule out good second hand kit !
