tig gloves vs MMA gauntlets

im in need of some new welding gloves...i use the cheap of the cheap and treat them as disposable as i dont do enough to justify expensive gloves...

i usually buy the 3.99 red gauntlets from screwfix, but have noticed they do tig gloves to for an extra quid...

whats the difference between the two?

MMA gauntlets are big thick things so they protect you from the really intense arc. TIG gauntlets are relatively thin so as to be able to have a good amount of control with the torch and especially the filler

They would not last very long, the better feel would translate into more burn through the thinner leather so yer daft idea.

The difference is mainly the thickness of the leather.
I don't think it's anything to do with arc intensity because a 150 amp AC arc is waaaaaaaaaay more intense than an equal mma arc. It's simply down to two main things. 1 spatter and slag. This will kill soft leather tig glovess in quick succession 2 electrode support. Sometimes it's more comfortable to rest your mma electrode on the other hand while it's at full length. You won't do that for long with a tig glove.
And 3 the tig filler rods range from 1mm - 3.2mm. Try feeding that with a thick leather gauntlet. Good tig gloves are soft supple smooth leather quite thin material giving just enough protection from the arc. They are useless if you want to start touching anything hot.

I use tig gloves for stick. They dont last as long, they're slightly more expensive, and i soon learnt not to touch the hot bits!
But: i *detest* wearing gloves, so prefer them to be thinner and lighter when i do wear them.

When I say intensity I was using it as a short term for spatter / arcing in bit of a different way to TIG. Maybe not the best word to use, I agree

i might get both as im going to be buying a mig in the next few days (once the last of the megane is sold off) and i was never a fan of the gauntlets as the last mig i had used a cheap torch with a small trigger and it was arkward to get on it in certain positions...

probably the same glove...i find the ones i buy are a bit of false security. a few times now ive welded something up thats taken a few rods and its obviously hot but dont feel it thtough the gloves...well not straight away anyway, but when the heat soaks through my god it stays there for a while

as above, i bought some tig gloves and some MMA gaulntlets, and i must say the tigs gloves make a huge difference when mig welding. so much easier to get a feel for the torch and control the torch too without big cumbersome gloves getting in the way.
