In The fire industry it looks like we will be going back to BS.
Not BS/EN or EN/BS.

The BS regulations are better than the EU ones.

I would imaging that all those standards systems are pretty close to each other anyway. Then when the product design goes to china to be manufactured, the chinese spend half a day laughing at them and make it their way anyway.

Back in early 1981 when I was on a disablement resettlement course at Humberstone Road Leicester I was tasked with making precision imperial sized parts on a metal work lathe.
Having been converted to working in SI and simple metric for the previous 15 years or so i asked the instructor why were we still playing in imperial .

He blew a gasket big time . " Because they are precisely accurate & the threads are scientifically designed & tested ." was his angry reply. I guessed he was not a metric fan .

Well the Americans never even seemed to make an effort towards the metric system, i suppose the logistics of converting such a large country to metric would be mind boggling.

the joiners and builders at work laugh when I give em measurments in metric and imperial I take the easiest to read of the tape measure depending what it is

If you dont need to be that accurate then 300mm = 1' 25mm = 1'' 12mm = 1/2" 6mm = 1/4" 1200mm = 4' 2400 = 8'

There's no real difference from what I can see - most of the BS/EN standards (or Eurocodes) we come across are just the respective BS re-badged to allow it to be used across the EU. Where they have changed at all it is usually where things have been updated for the better, or to reflect new practices, and always done in conjunction with the BSi, etc, in this country.

Sadly to go 80% red with a 20% colour band was a British idea. As at that time most fire extinguishers manufacture's were having the bodies made in China.
It made them cheaper to make.

But there is mutterings to go back that way, but as it will remain a EU standard I suspect they will not.

The BS fire regulations are better than the EU as we lean to prevention and detection and evacuations..
In Germany they lean to evacuations first, hence the need for higher emergency light Lux levels in German buildings.

i always thought it made sense to know at a glance what you were grabbing rather than having to read a label, however progress is progress even if it isnt always sensible.

Extinguishers are a aid to escape.
But the important part is to have the correct unit in the correct place for the risks.
That's why you will be seeing more small foams in office were the staff have fridges.
That is the oil used in them has a low flash point when it becomes a vapour. As a CO2 will not be of any use.

That's progress of having a greener fridge.

New extinguisher have a colour band, so no need to read.
It is a big pity that employers do not give fire training any more.

This thread has been interesting ...
Now for home markets ................will we turn to a different classification /coding for steel sheet , rod & bar etc .

I've just ordered six x 6 mtrs of 50/50 right angle MS x 5 mm thick and one of 30 x 30 x 5 all black hot rolled , When I rang in the order the guy on the end of the phone said in a very bored voice " Steel , what do you want "?
When I asked what grades of mild steel were available as I wanted to do a fair bit of drilling in it he said , " Dunno , it's all the same to me " .

Advice on this would be very nice as I'm so out of date in this area .
I want to make several simple six sided cubes out of the 50 /50 equal angle to turn them into castored braked heavy work tables we can move around . inside the cube will be a couple of builders scaffolding plank shelves to carry heavy ( ish ) things about 30 kg each or more . The boards & tops will be coach bolted on and a steel 30 x 30 lip routed in with counter sunk screws at the front edge of each table
