waterbased paint & isocyanates

Ive just been reading some uk HSE documents on spray booths and isocyanates and its states as do other web sites from other countries that some waterbased paints can contain isocyanates.

ive posted this because a lot of people seem to think that waterbased is totally safe, even though in most instances a 2k clear coat is used that does contain isocyanes people also opt for a 1k clear coat to avoid isocyanates, the difference is waterbased uses an emulsion rather then solvents.

the answer is, read the product data or better still ask before buying.

Why would an air drying paint require isocyanates? That is only required for a chemical reaction with the hardener, so I would need some convincing that it isn't just "nanny says so it must be right" scaremongering.

I heard this claim a while ago and looked for water based paint that contained isocyanate. I couldn't find any.
When you know that isocyanate reacts with moisture, I struggle to see how it can be used in water based paint.

it does exist, this page from BASF mentions water based 2 component polyurethane

I've found a water based hardener for automotive use that contains isocyanate according to the data sheet.

I never knew that water based paints could contain isocyanates, something to watch out for in the future. I've got a big COSHH project comming up at an aerospace factory

to be fair though, not too many home sprayers (those without the correct safety procedures in place) would use the stuff anyway unless required to by law. Would they?

No I doubt it, most use solvent based base coat don't they

Looks like it but still worth knowing as some people may think it's harmless because it's water based even though it's 2k

It does seem like it, I've just been looking again and it seems like there's a few references to water based 2K epoxy for use as floor sealers but I haven't looked at the data sheets to find out if they contained any isocyanates. I have also found a water based paint accelerator for water based base coats but no mention of any datasheet for the product, so no idea of what it contains.
