Without trying to brag too much, I ended up helping an A-level physics student with her revision because I got bored with my GCSE revision for tomorrow.

Anyway, today was my day off to have it brought over.

But yeah ... I'm going to try to 'forget' the car for the weekend so I can focus on Maths revision, which is on Monday for paper 1, and paper 2 is Friday ... and then THAT'S IT!

Hello everyone.

Trying to just do some planning here.

To complete this job, what are the tools am I going to need?

• MIG welder + stuff
• Angle grinder? (right ... to cut away the bad metal?) Then I assume angle grinder heads
• Drill and drills bits inc. screw remover (My Dad has a really cheap cordless drill which he got from TESCO, but will that do?)
• Nut breaker (I have a hammer at home)
• WD-40 ... lots and lots of WD-40

I think that covers a good chunk. Any other ideas?

Penetrating oil is better than wd40 for freeing off stuck stuff .
Pdg beat me to the wd thing
Diesel or paraffin for soaking manky bits before cleaning

Maybe a jack and axle stands as you will need to get under the car to work. A wire brush works wonders on bolts and bits the more rust, dirt and mud you can get off the thread the better.

As others have said do you have access to basic tools , socket sets and spanners.
Once you start on the bodywork you can never have enough or a big enough variety of clamps.

Maybe a jack and axle stands.

dont use a scissor jack or similar they are dangerous, and never think it will be ok if i go under without stands for a second, it only takes a second to collapse and kill you

Might not be the sort of thing you think off till you need it, but a small fire extinguisher for emergencies, bucket of water or sand. A damp rag will come in handy for a bit of underseal that might catch. Haven't welded cars for years but we used to use a old fairy washing liquid bottle (think they are all different now.) for a handy quick blast of water to cool things.

The more you can remove the better, but you never know when you might come across some cavity wax or foam.

No my family is very unDIY which has annoyed me since a child. I would look at a broken toy to think "why can't it be fixed? It was made once!" and hopefully I'll be the family DIY guy.

I'll, by the sounds of it, have to get a toolset.

I have no idea if those jags are metric or imp, but halfords do some pretty decent kits that include all manner of spanner, socket etc.

I'd also recommend some sort of impact wrench (and sockets). I've got a couple of Clarke electric ones and they have got me out of many a problem. It will save you snapping an awful lot of bolts - pity I only realised that half way through.

You're also going to need a bunch of "other stuff". Something to lie on, some overalls or similar, some decent eyewear, ear muffs (especially at your age - you must protect them), and I would suggest some anti vibration gloves or similar (although I'm standing by to get bantered for that).

It is mainly imperial, which doesn't exactly make it easier. The impact wrench sounds very good but it's £300 I just don't have, especially when I'll need to get a decent MIG welder. As for something to lie on, the waterproof tarpaulin cover might just do me, as it's under the car, and extends outwards somewhat.

I think I'll have to make do with a nut breaker and hammer for now ... :|

good idea, but don't buy the really cheap looking sockets with no names on them, the first stubborn nut and they will split apart, look for tools with recognised names on them

Might also be worth considering OLD Kamasa or Draper but it needs to be very old, the newer stuff is a poor comparison.

Not at all Dazza, Draper Expert, Clarke Pro, Stanley Expert are all more than good enough for the average DIYer and not bank-breaking either.
Even Halfords stuff is decent enough, just avoid stuff like Silverline, Rolson etc. though I believe Silverline do do a better quality range on some of their stuff?

I can't fault the Draper Expert range.

Absolutely nothing wrong with draper gear as long as you go for their slightly more up market gear rather than the value range. Quite interested to see how the project pans out. Read some of the posts on the retroride links you provided and if I was dead set on a project and was getting slated the way some of their forum members were commenting I would have left the forum. You are young enough to be making mistakes an learning to rectify them. There's a thread on retrorides of a guy doing up an old BMW from quite a while ago and if you read thru that you can see just how bad rust and rot can be but it also shows how a methodical and non rushed approach can pay off for you. If anyone can remember the link or the guys name to look up then please post it as I think it's a great thread. As far as gear goes you can do a lot worse than draper or teng gear(check wheeler dealers edd china, he uses the same teng torque wrenches that I do) and for power tools get your ass round the boot sales. Or just buy cheap from lidl or aldi or any other value place then upgrade as you go. No point spending a clean fortune at the start incase it all goes to hell in a handcart and you get fed up.
