Raglan vertical mill lead screw nut

Good evening all, hope one of you can help. I noticed a massive amount of backlash on my miller today so I've stripped it down and on close inspection the nut is fubard. I can slide the nut three quarters the width of a thread on the screw so it can't have long left.

So the question is does anybody know of a place I can buy one off the shelf as I'm slightly terrified of the prospect of sending my leadscrew in the post and it goes missing

Makes nuts for various machines on ebay and very helpful.

I did send him my nut and screw as he hadn't made metric ones for my lathe before but I sent it special delivery which was pricey but worth it.

I've managed to source a tap off eBay. I think the thread is 16 x 3 mm trapezoidal (acme) so for £15 I've taken a punt. Shouldn't be to hard to make as the shape is irrelevant as long it has a spigot to locate in the knee.

Can't really offer any advice to help you, but that milling machine looks a cracking little bit of kit!!

Yes it's a nice little machine that complements the Myford really well. Here's a better pic. I've put it back together until the tap turns up. ...



I think these are quite rare (although my nephew also has one!). Acording to the lathes website the were made from 1950 to 1960 which I find strange as this is a metric machine so really its up to date. I think they were made just down the road from Myford.

From your pic it looks like a square or 10 degree thread rather than Tr/acme.

I'm not 100% sure what it is as I don't have a thread gauge. I have a friend though who is an expert machinist who will have a look if all else fails and even make a tap if necessary.

There are two ways. First way is to learn something and make one yourself. Second way is to have Steve Butler make you one as suggested earlier. If your machine tools are making you money then the first way is not for you. If you have work that needs to progress on the miller the first way is not for you. Steve has made nuts for my machinery and they are very good.
I use my machines for myself and sometimes for others but I prefer not to be making parts for them, they are for making parts for other equipment. The screw will also have a fair amount of wear in the zone of most use and loading. I am not familiar with the Raglan, if the screw is 1 start then Kingston in Hull have very precise 3G fit Acme stock. You can behead the original worn screw from the driven shank that takes the handwheel/power feed and cut and shut the new screw using pin or braze or weld to join. If it is two start then you will hunting high and low in the UK>

Well spotted. The usual resource states " Both square and Acme-form feed screws appear to have been used during the production cycle". I would bin the nut and screw and replace with Acme of the same pitch. I reckon you are correct Kram. The close image shows it as 1 start I think so it would be easy to replace nut and screw with Acme.

Here is an update. The machine is now fixed . I now ow a big favour to a friend of my brother who was (and still is) an expert machinist. He spent literally hours making me a replacement nut from scratch. It took 125 passes on his lathe to cut the internal thread . It turned out to be a 16 x 1mm square thread.
I think the man likes torturing himself as he also made me a spare .........

So now it's all back together and working perfectly. He said there is half a thou of backlash on the new nut!!
