BOC - rental getting ridiculous.

That's enough - it's going to be returned and a rent free bottle sourced.

Have a drive round the firm's selling calor gas etc, I found mine stocked all welding gases.. £40 a year rent and £35 is a refill for full size bottle.
Seems to be a few independents that don't advertise too well.

Might not be the cheapest but two local suppliers (in different towns) so handy.
Just rang up and they have bottles in stock. One off deposit is similar amount as the annual BOC charge however deposit is 100% refundable no matter how far in the future.

I use SGS Gases too Paul. The owner used to give a rebate via this forum when you got a bottle - see if you can find the thread.

I worked out that if I used more than a couple of bottles per year, that the rental free bottles worked out more expensive. On the face of it rent free looks as though its cheaper, but bottles are smaller and gas cost quite a bit higher, so in some cases rent free is more money.

Y is bigger and cheaper on deal, are you commercial?

DIY only so X is plenty big enough for my needs. Will look at Y though.

I think bottle rental is a racket too. The bottle in my shed is empty, but i am still paying for it. A fill is about half what the rental is.

They make their money on the bottle rental. Gas price for larger industrial users is subsidised by small users paying well over the odds.

I just think of my bottle rental as my annual membership to the 'TIG weld as much as you like and when you like' club. The more you weld the cheaper the gas gets.

True, but it is money for old rope really. Why not have the usual system of leaving a deposit for the bottle.

They make their money out of bottle rental, and if it was a deposit system gas price would probably double. Even with rental I am paying a good deal less than using the same amount of gas on a rental free basis.

The bottles have s finite life and do get wrecked before that on occasions. If I guy rents yet only pays for one fill a year it's not economic on the bottle costs
I get this but just think boc are a right shower. Staff who don't care about work or business success or failure. Just turn up do as little as good as the minimum standard and get paid

BOC have the resources to completely destroy the rent free companies but I guess their biggest market are the major players who have bulk tanks. We were an Adams Gas stockist for a while and you would amazed how many people would query a £55 or £80 fully defundable deposit because they didn't realise how much rental they were paying with BOC. We had one customer who's secretary had been sending a cheque to BOC for years, he didn't know they were billing him for 4 bottles but he only had one, he had no idea why they thought he had four and couldn't prove otherwise as it had been too long.Even with and X size bottle they charge a handling fee of £17ish.

I don't think the rent has gone up that much on an X size, I'm pretty sure I was paying £80+ 10 years a go.

i can understand why you would have an X size if you hardly use it.
but a Y size is twice the gas volume and cheaper on the hobby deal.

Oh, I think there is a plan to sort it and it's all known about. Just hope the plan is a good one. Let's face it the accounts don't paint a rosey outlook if it's not sorted
