At just 40yrs old This was my first welding task & was very worried. never used a welder before but it had to be done. Bought myself a sip dp181 welder & spent a long weekend on it with help of a good friend. The prep work is the hardest but the smile afterwards is great. You are from the midlands I see. Then the job is no problem, look what we have produced and not gobbed off about it. That was not rust , just patina. Nice work yothe.

I think I'll buy the workshop manual for the XJS that is a digital download - my phone will be able to display it, so it's not like it's limited to my PC. The main reason is that A) It's £7 and B) The search function will never have been so handy for a 1200 page manual.

Even better then! Will be the best £7 you'll spend, especially if you don't have previous experience of working on cars.

Dont know if you checked out the gov, web site I stated earlier, it will tell you mot history, so you can work out what has been done,what was listed as fail last time and advisories, believe me you will find it usefull and could save yourself a few quid in the process. Arther

That was the first thing I did: apparently, it's been standing for 13 years, which is more than the 11 for that website to be recorded. It's a total stab in the dark. I'm just praying so much that the chassis hasn't gone ... that's all.

Hard to read the data plate photo but looks like a 3 phase machine so not much good for home use. Needs a different type of electricity supply to what you get at home.

It has a switch on the panel to change between 415 and 240 so it is a single and 3 phase machine. Should be fine on a domestic supply but you need to see what the input current is as in all likelihood it will not run on a 13A socket.

Hard to tell from photos but that looks like an old weatherproof 13a plug it fitted with. All depends on the inrush but might get away with 240v on lower settings.
This must be a huge learning curve for you both with the project car and the tools, just take your time the help and advise you need is out there.

My DT teacher said [anyway] to hold fire on any purchases until I've done this practice with him. For many reasons, I think that's best.

Anything like that is likely to sell pretty much straight away on Ebay. Looking on Gumtree is probably more likely to turn something up at the right money. Couple of weeks ago got a brand new Wurth HSS tap and die set for £100.....................

Seb, I've skipped a few posts, but the Jag looks awesome!

I didn't like them that much before until I bought an xj6 after I crushed my left wrist and needed an automatic quick, and I loved the car, had 3 more Jags since (wrist is better now too)

few people on here talking about how much work it is etc.. but hat's half the fun when you're young!

my first car was a 17yr old mk1 fiesta with 18 previous owners !!! (more than one a year) got it for 380 just before I finished my GCSEs and it needed a mountain of work... the floor wasn't even joined on at the sides, only the front and back!

had a great time working on it too :-)

don't worry about the big jobs, break everything down into smaller jobs and work on them, pretty soon everything will be done, you've got enough energy when you're young to power through most stuff as long as you're stubborn/determined enough!

My Grandparents said to me "You're going to have a great summer". I'm hoping it'll be that as opposed to tears, anyway.
