Found - oxy-acetylene bottles & kit

Apologies for what will undoubtedly be some newbie questions but I could use some advice.

I've spent the last year or so helping to clear the house & garage of my father in law, who passed away a couple of years ago. He'd been a farmer all his life so unsurprisingly there was quite a lot of heavy duty tools, including a Pickhill Bantam welder and some oxy acetylene bottles on a trolley, with assorted equipment.

I read the rules and am not trying to sell these here, however before I go and advertise the welder and gas bottles I really could do with some advice on the practicality / legality on selling the gas bottles - I notice I don't seem to see these about. I also have no idea how to price them, assuming I can legally sell them.

The bottles are pretty large - the Acetylene is a BOC Size H, not sure on the Oxygen but it's a similar size. I do not know how full the bottles are or how long they've been sitting there, guess is 5 years +. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

use the bottles till there empty and take them down the council tip or give em to someone who uses them

only if theres gas in em I have enough crap to get rid of without adding more

the pickhill welder would sell for over 80 quid no problem there a nice transformer

if the regulators hoses and torch are in decent nick take em off and sell em for a few quid they wont be worth much though

Thanks for that guys - appreciate the advice! Will see if I can find anyone who can make use of the gas then and if not return to BOC.

Best idea. Don't let BOC bully you into paying any 'rental owed', if he had an account.

Try and find out if the bottle rental has been paid since he died before returning them, if it has you can get a refund for months outstanding, if not there may be a hefty outstanding bill to pay.

No idea, loaded question obviously. I handled my dad's stuff when he passed and since he had a long fight with cancer and spent months in hospital/the rest on morphine he had a stack of un-paid bills/ red letters/bailiffs warnings and no estate to pay them from, he even had two direct debits running for insurance on cars that were long gone. Auto-renewed but he was too out of it to notice. I took advice and drafted a simple letter which saw all of them off.

Ironically, when he was diagnosed as terminal they upped his pension by an amount, and owed him £400 back-pay. By mistake they missed the decimal and put 40 grand in his bank. I advised him to blow the lot and it was only after he died that I learned about the pension law - they can go after the next of kin for it. Glad he 'fessed-up and gave it all back

It's not good doing the estate, very stressful upon the loss of a parent too, my commiserations to you. If I had no estate I would try Dignitas on Barclaycard when the time comes! Would be interesting to find out about BOC's take on the OP's cylinders.

Phone boc and they will tell you if there is an account active on the bottles which are always rented
It's highly unlikely they will chase the deceased for debt owed but it solves the late payment demands and they will collect
The other gear is worth putting up for sale if nobody wants it in the family
However gas equipment needs testing after a few years and most will junk it rather than re- test as it's cheap enough ( gauges pipe torches etc) it don't sell for much as a result

Not iff your with 02 mobile phones....Laying on my back in hospital this January just gone getting over a very bad operation and i was getting hounded by 02 tele sales wanting to upgrade my contract. "Leave me alone ime in hospital getting over a Cancer operation" i said, the young kid on the other end said "is it terminal because iff it is we need to put you on another contract"...money up front i bet "no its not terminal i shouted down the phone so go and copulate yourself (Mod alert) and hung up
