Storage ideas for flat items in boxes like socket sets, drills, etc

I have loads of tools in hard plastic boxes. Storage has always been to pile them on top of one another but this is a PIA if I then need something from the bottom of the pile.
Anyone ideas for racking that will accommodate varying thickness of boxes ?

In the back of van I store them on end that way you lift them out vertically.

I have an old filing cabinet. Most of the tool boxes sit upright, like files, so I store them that way. Tools I use often are in the top two drawers; ;little used tools in the bottom two.

I built this about 16yrs ago. The boxes can be bought from many places. These were from B&Q. If you wait they can be found for 6quid each. the cabinet is an old college lab cupboard.

Used small batten to make the runners, Just needed more packout at one side.

A kitchen cupboard would work just as well

It doesn't have to cost that much, these cardboard bins are very durable. The part numbers are for 1998/9 Manitou foks so I must have had them over 16yrs

Kitchen storage is a great inspiration for workshops and if the units are robust enough, good enough for practical use. I have a fair bit of Ikea bits and bobs in mine. Also nicked a shed load (!) of those indestructible recycling bins. They are awesome for workshops. Plus my local council have now switched to bigger bins, there are little piles of these large green buckets everywhere free for the taking!

I use something like this and stand the cases on end, I think I need to label the cases soon as I forget which one's which these days

I used to use two old steel filing cabinets, like wardrobes......sadly lost them in my divorce, but the were excellent.
