help identifying electrical connection !

Can someone possibly enlighten me as to what the copper spring at the end of the yellow wire is called. I tried googling but I cant seem to find anything. It came out of the old Wolf 4" sander in the top of the picture and the springy coil slipped over the brass end of the barrel wich the carbon brushes poked out from & if possible I would like to save it rather than throw it away.

Not sure tbh, that`s why i thought I would ask some more knowledgeable people on here. The one at the top of the pic I can reuse but it`s the one that attaches to the other brush holder ( lower left in pic ) that got fried.

Google the repair tool(belt sander name), look for the exploded diagrams.
Then you will be able to find a supplier for it.

That's how I found a supplier for an American power file power switch I needed.

Thank`very much 500e that`s it. Easy when you know what to look for. I did try to have a look for the wolf 4" sander but did`nt see any diagrams for that model. I suppose it`s either too old or I did`nt look hard enough, but at least I know what it`s called now.

Hi Chris no I don`t as I could`nt seem to find what I needed. As a further update to this thread and for Mr Ford or in case anyone else stumbles upon this and finds it useful, this Wolf sander was actully made by Makita (hence the similarity) from approx the 60`s and is still made with very little change till today. I have ordered the above replacement (17 524206-1 1 FIELD 240V 9401 (240V) £25.99) as I could`nt find a uk supplier for brush holder contact springs after looking for a while online.

You may well find on the serial number/model number info plate on the Wolf, the Makita logo and M E W---Makita Electrical works, now when Wolf was in their hayday, we hadnt even heard of Makita.
There is quite a bit of Wolf history on the net but I have not found reference to the M E W letters and the logo, i must dig a wolf out for a picture.

In 1978, they employed 850 people. The company was purchased by Kango Tools Ltd. out of Peterborough, England in the 1980's. The Wolf name disappeared as the Kango line was "rationalized," as the euphemism goes. Kango was acquired in turn by Atlas-Copco. In the early 2000's, Kango was sold to a Hong Kong firm, TI. The Wolf factory in London is long since gone, although imitations of their products may have been made under license by a firm in India.

Wolf Tools Ltd. had its works in London (Hanger Lane, district W1), I believe the firm was established in the 30s. The brand even had a Royal seal of approval for being Suppliers to the Court. Indeed their machines were heavy and very robust. The industrial line was made entirely from cast parts and stamped steel and were sprayed in a green hammerite finish. Wolf made the first DIY drill in 1949, when B&D still had to establish itself in the UK (years later it built a factory in Spennymoor in county Durham). This "Cub" was a little pistol grip single speed drill, also entirely out of metal casting, later to contain bakelite and other insulating materials when the model was turned into the double insulated "Cubmaster".
The Dutch State Railways also used many Wolf drills, which were generator driven and used on site to drill holes in the oakwood sleepers underneath the rails, for the fixing clamps to be fastened into with large woodthread bolts.
In the late 60s, the green finish was changed into silvergrey and red, with ivory and red for the DIY products. In the 70s, aquablue became a very popular color in England (B&D UK also chose it, along its orange). Wolf changed its colors to grey /aqua and later ivory/aqua for their entire product line.
In the early 80s, Wolf was purchased by Kango Tools Ltd. in Peterborough. Kango had red and black as its colors, therefore also Wolf changed into this livery. The Wolf tool models gradually merged into the Kango product line to disappaear entirely a few years later when Kango simplified its range and changed its colors to yellow and black. Kango itself was bought by Atlas-Copco AB some 6 years ago. Atlas then also bought AEG Tools(Winnenden, Germany) and Milwaukee Tools, both of which were sold again last year to a Hong Kong firm, because Atlas wishes to return to its core business (mining tools, air driven equipment and compressors, solely sold B-to-B). I believe Kango is again on its own, but I don't know who owns it now. The Wolf brand and factories however, have ceased to exist more than 20 years ago, that's for sure. Eight years ago I saw the old Wolf machine models back on the internet, made in license by a factory in India, in the colors yellow, black and green. I forgot the brand name and, by the way, have never again seen this firm or its products on the internet since. So used Wolf tools are the only ones to be had, there won't be new ones anymore.

Hi Daniel,
Is the rear drive roller still OK, the big Wolf belt sanders were notorious for the rubber on the rear drive roller aging and disintegrating in use? The almost £60 quid replacement cost (part listed as number 48 in the exploded diagram) meant that many models were dumped.
There used to be an eBay seller trading as sellerbible and based in Hong Kong that stocked them for the Makita model but don't currently list them. They still stock the front tension roller at £10.26 postage free and shed loads of assorted other power tool spares.
I've bought a few electrical components and carbon brushes off them, all have been fine. Might be worth a look if there are other spares that might fit both Wolf and Makita models and could be of use to you?
All the best with the restoration, like you I hate throwing quality tools away.

Hi Barrie I`ll take a closer look when i rebuild it, but from memory it all appeared ok. The sander actually belonged to a college in cambridge who had thrown it out & it was offered free to my dad who works in a tyre/exhaust place in St Neots. It`s amazing how well some of these older tools keep on going. A couple of years ago I burnt out a jcb & a dewalt grinder before buying a cheaper 1010W grinder from Homebase wich apart from a new set of brushes is still going strong. I`ve used this cheaper grinder for everything from cutting up an old oil tank to cleaning off a rusty old Bt trailer with a big wire wheel and it just takes everything in it`s stride.

Had a look at three Wolf Tools I think I bought them in the 60s/70s. Now Web documents point to all Wolf being made in london, However two of the information plates have the "M E W"-Makita Electrical Works, on them. We also have Made in England, made in Japan, and Foreign.
I have an old small pistol drill in the loft-Saphire?? I`ll try and hunt it out.
All room for thought. As I mentioned 60s very early 70s I hadnt heard of Makita, mid 70s yes.
