First attempt at pipe bending ( Bow rail )

With wanting to make a bow rail for my project boat i thought i would have a go, but on mild steel as i dont want to go blowing money on SS....yet.

I decent chap on here lent me his mandrel bender a few week back and i have just got around to having a go. It is made from 19mm tube at the minute but as it goes i mite just send this to a local work shop to bend up from SS, this is a good bender but it does make a few marks.

Looks good, may need a few more adjustments yet but a sit started to pee down i had to pack away.








Unsure now as to get the joint welded or use rail fittings, i le the look of them, but its the cost of them

One bit i could do to well was the side rails and the long curve. I rushed it so a few kinks, but as said is just the practice.

I just straightened out a Pullpit in 20mm SS. Badly moored and had bashed the quai a few times, ripping out three of the four fixings. Very easy, just put in soft jaws in the vise and tweeked it. Corrected the side curves and the fairly abrupt bends to the forward overhang. The only (slightly) tricky bit to yours is the bend right at the front. I keep some old cast iron pulleys in different sizes and just pull the tube round them. The 'V' is not far off a decent bending former and is quite good enough for most jobs. Any slight deformation due to not being the right shape for the tube is really not noticable, unless the curve is very tight.

BTW, boat is coming on well.

Its a contact sport is boating i believe lol. I am still debating if to put rubbing strakes along the hull sides aswell a sthe gunwale.
This pipe was 19mm with 2mm wall, took some bending even mounted on the steel work bench. Think i will be going with 22mm 1.5 SS though.

BTW, it is but to slowly. soon be painted, just filling blow holes.

Its a contact sport is boating i believe lol. I am still debating if to put rubbing strakes along the hull sides aswell a sthe gunwale.

It sure is a contact sport, try watching the parking on either the norfolk broards, or in the greek islands when flotillas are trying to reverse part from an anchor!

The Broads, we hope to get don there with this one, looks a great and sounds it for boating, should i get BIG fenders then lol. I have decided on the extra strakes anyway.

The extra rubbing strake for say 2/3rds of the length will add charachter, and enhance the lines.

Yes you want big fenders for where ever you go.

Ah, the Broads, not so much mucking about in boats, as boating around in muck....
I had a delightful holiday there, in the days when it was a bit less crowded.
There is nice local river here, the Charente, bit like the upper Thames, but without the huge number of boats. You can spot the rental boats easily. Multiple rubbing strakes and rows of big fenders

As an aside, the only person never to make a pigs ear of parking a boat, is some one who has never done it.

The bloody things have no brakes, kick sideways when you go backwards, but not all in the same direction.

I think it was Max Aitkin who was asked about that quote after the first Cowes Torquay powerboat race. The original quote was Ocean racing (sail) is sitting in a cold shower ripping up £5 notes. Aitkin replied that for powerboat racing, they didn't make notes big enough that you could tear up fast
enough.

Incidently, about T sitting in the bow and sh++ting herself. The boaty term for the bathroom is the 'heads', from days of yore, when one hung one's bum over the side up front (the head of the ship) to do the movement of the day. But, of course, you knew that..

Cant see the seasickness being an issue on this fine ship........unless you take it on the sea.

And there are plans to go to sea in it, only sheltered harbours/coves etc, for weekend trips etc, going to fit a set of bilge keels soon. Mainly river/canal/lakes though.

No matter what you do to that boat, due to the shape of the bottom it will bob about like weebles wobble but they dont fall down, except as there is little ballast to aid self righting in a sea way on the beam this may barrel roll.

Be very careful out in the sea. If you get into any waves. We once picked up two guys whos fishing boat had got caught on some choppy water, clinging to an upturned small motor cruiser.

The bilge keel are only for drying out, will be used as a floating caravan mainly, only venturing on calm seas close in. After this project i may well get a much bigger sea boat, well in the 35 foot range sea going boat, first things first though, use this to see how i go with sea sickness and if i can get over it, my dad and brother did, wasnt easy though..

This is a proper sea going boat.....have you seen the cost of fuel, you need a cloth engine.
